LIVINGSTON, NJ — With Livingston resident Michelle Bent at the helm as the Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator for Livingston Public Schools (LPS), the district has earned third place in the electronic newsletter category of the New Jersey Schools Public Relations Association’s (NJSPRA) School Communication Awards competition, which recognizes outstanding print and electronic collateral material in New Jersey educational communications programs.

Recognized for its weekly "DISCOVER: Livingston Public Schools” newsletter—which highlights the accomplishments of students and faculty, provides details about upcoming events and more—LPS qualified for the award based on two recent issues submitted to the NJSPRA. Applicants in the electronic newsletter category included newsletters that are directed toward internal or external audiences, published periodically and disseminated electronically to the intended audience.

“As an LPS parent and Livingston resident, I know that our schools are a huge source of pride for our community,” said Bent. “Our staff and students work very hard each day. It is important to highlight them.”

As the former editor of “The West Essex Tribune” in Livingston, Bent described compared putting the weekly newsletter together to “making a fun little newspaper,” adding that she “enjoy[s] everything about it—highlighting students, photos, making videos, etc.”

“The primary role of the professional school communicator is to disseminate important information about schools and school districts to all constituencies,” said Bent. “NJSPRA developed the School Communication Awards competition to recognize professional school communicators and other school leaders managing communications for developing tools that go above and beyond in disseminating important messages to their publics. Winning entries may also serve as best practices for other districts to benchmark against and emulate.”

Although gathering material has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and remote learning began, Bent said that LPS staff members and parents have been “great about providing photos and information” for the Discover newsletter.

In fact, Bent recently launched a second newsletter for LPS called “LPS Leads” that features content specific to remote learning at LPS based on feedback and inquiries from students, faculty and other community members.

“We decided to create a second newsletter because hybrid/remote learning is a different experience with its own set of challenges and relevant information,” said Bent. “We created a new email address, LPSVirtual@livingston.org, in an effort to collect specific feedback from parents. LPS Leads is an extension of that feedback, as well as a vehicle to allow our educational team to highlight new and/or important information.”

Stating that the administration is extremely proud of both newsletters as well as the district’s overall communication with the Livingston community, LPS Superintendent Dr. Matthew Block expressed that Bent is “very deserving of this award.”

“She works very, very hard to make sure we're communicating effectively with members of the public,” he said. “Winning entries are used as models to serve as ‘best practices’ for other districts and to benchmark and to encourage other districts to emulate them—so congratulations, Michelle.”
