Rivian electric bikes inbound? Former Specialized CTO moves to Rivian signaling e-bike advancement - Electrek

mivo.indah.link

California-based automaker Rivian is best known today for its electric trucks, but could tomorrow’s Rivian be an electric bike? That possibility is looking much more certain now that the former CTO of a major bicycle brand has joined Rivian’s development team.

We’ve already seen hints of Rivian’s electric bicycle aspirations via trademark filings.

As we previously reported, the company filed to expand the use of its Rivian trademark to a new category focused on electric bikes:

RIVIAN™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of bicycles; bicycle structural parts; electric bicycles; electric bicycle structural parts; electric bicycle components specially adapted for electric bicycles, namely, battery packs, motor controllers, electric motors, throttle controls, pedal assist sensors, display consoles, wiring harnesses, sprockets, cassettes, chains; bicycle frames; bicycle pedals; bicycle horns; bicycle brakes; bicycle chains; bicycle gears; bicycle wheels; bicycle seats; bicycle tires.

At the time, we noted that companies often file trademarks that they don’t end up using, and that this could have just been a way for Rivian to protect its name across other industries.

However, now we’re getting even stronger evidence that Rivian is actually developing new electric bicycles. The latest corroboration comes in the form of Rivian hiring the former CTO of Specialized Bicycle Components, maker of Specialized’s high end Turbo electric bicycles.

specialized turbo levo SL ebike
Could a Specialized e-bike expert help build Rivian’s first electric bike?

Chris Yu spent more than 10 years at Specialized, serving in various roles from R&D Engineer, Head of Applied Technologies, Chief Innovation Officer and CTO. Now his current role at Rivian is VP of Future Programs.

While a number of interesting projects could be hiding under that broad title, electric bicycles are obviously a specialty of Chris.

Further strengthening the case for Rivian’s expanded focus on electric bikes, sources with knowledge of the matter indicated that Rivian was indeed exploring e-bikes, fitting with Rivian’s modus operandi of making vehicles that cross the adventure, utility and everyday lifestyle.

Porsche and other automakers have also expanded into electric bikes

This wouldn’t be the first time a major automaker expanded into the quickly growing electric bike market.

Porsche launched two electric bikes last year alongside the Taycan Cross Turismo. BMW also unveiled several electric bikes last year.

Peugot has its own extensive line of e-bikes, and Spain’s SEAT has partnered with Barcelona-based Silence to roll out its own seated and standing electric scooters.

GM developed an electric bicycle in-house, though the project was killed off early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

ŠKODA rolled out one of the weirdest electric bike/scooter concepts we’ve seen, though there’s no indication it is headed for produciton.

Jeep has gotten into the high-power e-bike game via licensing agreements, though its similar attempt to co-develop an electric scooter was significantly less impressive.

Even motorcycle manufacturers like Harley-Davidson and BMW Motorrad have gotten into electric bicycles and scooters, though Harley’s results have been much more impressive than BMW’s.

Electrek’s Take

This would be a fascinating move for Rivian, and is likely well within their wheelhouse. While electric bikes aren’t exactly simple machines, they’re much easier to develop and produce than electric trucks. Not only are they much less labor and material intensive, but they are subject to considerably less regulatory oversight as well, further simplifying the path from R&D to production.

Scooping up Chris Yu is a great shortcut to bringing in the right talent, and it’s a move that is quite common in this industry. When Harley-Davidson decided to build electric bicycles, they did so after hiring some of the best talent from bicycle companies, for example.

I’m definitely excited to see what Rivian can come up with, and to see how it may shake up the industry.

Chinese electric vehicle maker Li Auto said Tuesday that it plans to raise $2 billion from U.S. investors through an "at-the-market" stock offering, in which share prices are determined at the time they're sold.

The funds will be spent to develop new technologies, including for autonomous driving, and for the development of future models, the Beijing-based company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A company raising funds via an at-the-market offering will generally sell a designated amount of stock over time through investment banks at prevailing market prices. Li Auto said that Goldman Sachs, UBS Securities, Barclays Capital, and the Hong Kong unit of China International Capital Corporation will be its agents for the new stock offering.

Li Auto is one of several Chinese electric vehicle companies to have drawn attention from U.S. investors in the last several years, along with rivals including Nio and XPeng. Founded in 2015, the company specializes in upscale electric SUVs with so-called "range extenders", which are internal-combustion engines that act as generators to recharge vehicles' batteries while driving.

While more electric vehicles are sold in China than in any other country, there are still parts of China where EV chargers are relatively scarce. A range extender can offer reassurance for customers in those regions and for drivers elsewhere who aren't quite ready to go 100% electric.

Li's two SUV models, the midsize ONE and flagship L9, offer 188 km (about 117 miles) and 180 km (about 112 miles) of electric-only range, respectively.

Li's U.S.-listed shares were down about 3.3% in early trading following the announcement.

Toyota is recalling its first mainstream electric car because the wheels can fall off - CNN

mivo.indah.link

(CNN Business)Toyota has issued recalls for its first mainstream electric car and one of its full-sized pickup trucks for problems in which nuts or bolts could loosen and wheels or axles can become disconnected.

Toyota warned owners of BZ4X electric SUVs to stop driving them because the wheels might fall off. The SUVs only recently went on sale in the United States and the warning and recall announced by Toyota Motor Sales USA on Thursday applies to all approximately 260 BZ4X SUVs that have been delivered to customers so far.
BZ4X owners should stop driving the vehicles immediately, according to Toyota's announcement. Bolts that hold the wheels on can loosen after even a relatively small number of miles on the road, allowing the wheels to detach. Toyota is still investigating why this can happen and under what sorts of conditions.
Toyota is warning drivers of the BZ4X crossover to stop driving them
Toyota doesn't know, yet, how to fix the issue, the automaker said. Until a remedy has been figured out, Toyota dealers will pick up customers' BZ4Xs and bring them to the dealership and provide free loaner vehicles in the meantime, Toyota said.
The Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra electric crossovers were developed jointly by the two Japanese automakers. They share most of their engineering and even look very similar. Subaru has not announced a similar recall for the Solterra because none of those have been delivered to customers in the United States yet, Subaru spokesperson Jessica Tullman said in an email.
The BZ4X is Toyota's first fully battery-powered electric vehicle that is not a modified version of a gasoline-powered model. Toyota had previously offered an electric version of the Rav4 SUV in some markets.
Nuts in the axle assemblies of some 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks may loosen, according to Toyota.
Toyota separately announced a recall for approximately 46,000 2022 Toyota Tundra full-size pickups in which nuts on the rear axle assembly can loosen. In some cases, this can cause an axle sub-assembly to become disconnected, affecting the truck's stability and braking, according to Toyota. The problem with the Tundra is unrelated to the issue affecting the BZ4X, the company added.
To fix this problem, Toyota dealers will inspect and retighten the nuts if needed, free of charge, according to Toyota. Some parts may also be replaced if required at no charge, Toyota said in its announcement. Toyota is not warning Tundra owners to immediately stop driving their trucks, however.
BZ4X and Tundra owners with questions about the recall can call Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

Best electric skillets: Our top three options available on Amazon - Mashable

mivo.indah.link

Electric skillets are a great option for anyone with limited kitchen space or who wants something that won’t heat up the kitchen. They’re also going to be your best bet for cooking larger meals for dinner parties — trust us when we say that creating that extra stovetop space is invaluable.

With that in mind, we’ve done the research for you—sifting through reviews and testing— to round up some of the highest quality electric skillets available online, from wallet-friendly basics to oversized griddles made for entertaining. Whether you’re looking for something to keep food warm during a dinner party or you’re in the market for a small and portable alternative to a traditional cooktop, your culinary routine is about to get a serious upgrade.

Is an electric skillet the same as a frying pan?

Electric skillets are not the same as a frying pan. A frying pan is a tool that you use on your stovetop, while an electric skillet is almost like a mini stove you can use to cook food on. Electric skillets are also bigger than frying pans so you can cook more on them than a traditional frying pan.

How long does an electric skillet last?

While there is no set amount of time that an electric skillet lasts, there are ways to make sure that it has a long lifespan. If you take care of your electric skillet and make sure it is always in a safe, dry space, then your skillet should stick around for a while. But, if you don’t take proper care of your skillet, it won’t last as long. The lifespan of the skillet also depends on its quality. If you spend more on your skillet, chances are it is going to last longer than a cheaper one.

How do I choose an electric skillet?

Before buying an electric skillet, there are some things you need to consider to help you buy one. One thing you want to consider is how big you want the skillet to be. Electric skillets come in a wide range of different sizes, so it is important to consider how much food you want to be able to cook at the same time before shopping. Another thing you want to consider is if you want the skillet to be nonstick. Having a nonstick skillet can be very helpful when cooking.

Is it worth buying an electric skillet?

One thing you may be wondering as you are shopping for an electric skillet is if it is even worth buying one. Well, buying an eclectic skillet may be worth buying if you are serious about cooking. Unlike stovetops that don’t offer even heat and have hot and cold spots, an electric skillet has consistent heat at the temperature that you set. Electric skillets can also be used for a wide range of things such as frying and sautéing. You can cook many different types of food on eclectic skillets as well.

Japanese automotive giant Toyota issued a safety recall for more than 2,000 of its all-electric SUV, the bZ4X.

Announced Thursday, the recall relates to the bZ4X's wheels. Toyota said owners of the vehicle would be notified through a variety of channels, starting June 23. Tokyo-listed shares of the company finished 0.7% lower on Friday.

"After low-mileage use, all of the hub bolts on the wheel of the subject vehicles can loosen to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle," a spokesperson for Toyota said in a statement sent to CNBC via email.

"If a wheel detaches from the vehicle while driving, it could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash," they added.

According to the spokesperson, the recall is "for all bZ4X vehicles in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Approximately, 2,700 vehicles are involved in this action."

The cause of the issue remains under investigation. "No one should drive these vehicles until the remedy is performed," the spokesperson said.

Toyota is well known for its hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles but is now attempting to make headway in the increasingly competitive battery-electric market, where firms like Tesla and Volkswagen are jostling for position.

"Toyota has been under pressure to up its game in EVs, so will be very disappointed that a recall has been necessary on its first mass-market electric cars," David Leggett, automotive editor at GlobalData, told CNBC.com via email.

"On the plus side though, the recall is an early one in the model lifecycle and on a mechanical part that is nothing to do with the car's electric powertrain," Leggett added. "They'll hope to quickly overcome the issue."

Toyota launched the bZ4X in Japan last month, and it is the first model in the company's bZ series. Last December, the company's president, Akio Toyoda, said Toyota planned "to roll out 30 BEV models by 2030."

According to the International Energy Agency, electric vehicle sales hit 6.6 million in 2021. In the first quarter of 2022, EV sales came to 2 million, a 75% increase compared to the first three months of 2021.

Toyota recalls bZ4X electric SUVs over wheel that could detach while driving - The Verge

mivo.indah.link

Toyota issued a global recall of its 2023 bZ4X electric crossover SUV less than two months after the vehicle was released. The automaker said the hub bolts on the wheel can become loose while driving, which could cause the entire wheel to detach. Naturally, Toyota is warning owners not to drive their vehicles until the problem is fixed.

The recall represents a setback for the world’s largest automaker, which has pledged to spend $17.6 billion to roll out 30 battery-electric models by 2030. The bZ4X, which began customer deliveries less than two months ago, is seen as the tip of the spear in Toyota’s belated attempt to shift to electric vehicles.

Toyota says the cause of the loose hub bolts is still being investigated. Customers are advised to notify their local authorized Toyota dealer, which will pick up the bZ4X for service and provide a loaner free of charge.

Among the 2,700 vehicles subject to the recall, 2,200 were destined for Europe, 280 for North America, 110 for Japan, and 60 for the rest of Asia. Most of the vehicles have not been delivered to consumers.

The bZ4X is the latest EV to get hit with a recall, although in comparison, it appears to be one of the most serious. Ford issued a recall last week for 49,000 Mustang Mach-E SUVs but insisted the problem could be fixed through an over-the-air software update. Other EVs have also been recalled over various software bugs and other minor issues.

The recall comes at a time when demand for electric vehicles is steadily rising, thanks to rising gas prices and a growing number of models available for purchase. Tesla continues to dominate the market, but legacy automakers are gaining ground with the release of mid-range crossovers and luxury vehicles. Prices are also rising, thanks to inflation, high demand, and the rising cost of key materials, such as the minerals that comprise lithium-ion batteries.

Raw material costs for electric vehicles have doubled during the pandemic - CNBC

Raw material costs for electric vehicles more than doubled during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report Wednesday by AlixPartners, forcing automakers from General Motors and Tesla to start-ups like Lucid and Rivian to significantly raise prices on new vehicles.

Average raw material costs for an EV totaled $8,255 per vehicle as of May, up 144% from $3,381 per vehicle in March 2020, led by materials such as cobalt, nickel and lithium – all essential for the production of batteries used to power electric cars and trucks. EV-specific costs have increased to $4,500 from roughly $2,000 in the past two years, according to AlixPartners.

The cost increases aren't limited to EVs: Raw material costs for traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines have also more than doubled during that time period to $3,662 per vehicle, up 106% from an average of $1,779 per vehicle in March 2020. That uptick is being led by increases in steel and aluminum.

The cost spikes come as automakers aggressively launch new EVs over the next several years. AlixPartners predicts the number of EV models available on the global market to increase from 80 last year to more than 200 by 2024.

As a result, AlixPartners expects the higher costs to force a relative slowdown in EV launches, as automakers move away from pushing electric vehicles to market as quickly as possible and refocus on profitability.

Ford Motor CFO John Lawler last week said rising commodity costs have wiped out the profit it initially expected to make on its electric Mustang Mach-E. While the vehicle was profitable when it was first launched in late 2020, he said that's no longer the case.

In the meantime automakers are raising prices for buyers.

GM on Friday announced it would hike the price of its electric Hummer by $6,250. The automaker blamed higher prices for parts, technology and logistics. Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and others previously announced notable increases in the starting costs of their EVs.

— CNBC's John Rosevear contributed to this article.

Mercedes Ready to Debut All Electric Heavy-Duty Truck - The Detroit Bureau

mivo.indah.link

Mercedes-Benz Trucks says it is ready to release a prototype of a battery-electric long-haul truck for carrying freight, which will be ready for road tests later this year for production in 2024.

Mercedes eActros LongHaul fascia REL
Mercedes-Benz Trucks says it is ready to release a prototype of its eActros LongHaul, a battery electric long-haul truck.

The battery-electric eActros long-distance truck will be part of Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ trade show highlight at this year’s IAA Transportation in September in Hanover, Germany. Other manufacturers such as Tesla also have been plotting to build battery-powered heavy-duty trucks.

“The electrification of heavy long-distance transport is the next milestone on our road to CO2-neutrality,” said Karin Rådström, CEO Mercedes-Benz Trucks. “The eActros LongHaul is a battery-electric vehicle which is planned to be economically feasible for our customers. My team and I look forward to presenting this innovative truck to our customers and the public in September.”

Plans for truck moved quickly

Plans for the 40-ton truck were first revealed in 2020 and the eActros LongHaul to be shown at IAA offers a preview of the design theme of the series-production vehicle.

The first prototypes are already undergoing intensive testing and the eActros LongHaul will be tested on public roads this year. In the coming year, near- production prototypes will go to customers for real-world use testing.

Mercedes eActros LongHaul sketches REL

On a single battery charge the eActros LongHaul will have a range of around 500 kilometers, or about 320 miles. The e-truck will enable high-performance charging — or so-called “megawatt charging.” The commercial introduction of the eActros LongHaul is scheduled for 2024.

In addition to the eActros LongHaul, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will present further new battery-electric trucks at IAA. The eActros for heavy-duty distribution transport has been in series production at the Wörth plant since October 2021.

The eEconic for municipal use will follow in July. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is pursuing the goal of increasing the proportion of locally CO2-neutral new vehicles in Europe to more than 50% by 2030.

New type of battery key to EV truck

The batteries used in the eActros LongHaul employ lithium-iron phosphate cell technology (LFP). These are characterized, above all, by a long service life and more usable energy. The batteries can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in well under 30 minutes at a charging station with an output of about one megawatt.

The long range on a single charge in combination with megawatt charging results in overall ranges on a par with conventional trucks and thus enables two-shift operations. The vehicle is also characterized by a balanced driveline for a very pleasant driving experience.

Mercedes eActros LongHaul side sketch REL

In addition, the eActros LongHaul features the manufacturer’s numerous safety innovations. The core of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks concept for battery-electric long-distance transport is to offer customers a holistic solution consisting of vehicle technology, consulting, charging infrastructure and services. The eActros LongHaul should be the right choice for customers in terms of profitability, sustainability and reliability.

The largest share of long-distance transport applications in transporters’ operational practices do not require a range beyond the approximately 500 kilometers the eActros LongHaul makes possible on a single charge.

In addition, legal restrictions on the driving times for truck drivers limit the need for longer ranges, depending on the case. For example, truck drivers in the EU must take a minimum of a 45-minute break after a maximum of 4.5 hours of driving. During this time energy for the remaining route can be recharged. The eActros LongHaul is therefore the right choice for transport companies when used regularly on routes that can be planned, given appropriate distances and charging options.

How to decipher your electric bill in Minnesota - Star Tribune

mivo.indah.link

The electricity-sucking summer air-conditioning season is upon us, just as energy costs are soaring.

With that in mind, consumers might be scrutinizing their electricity bills. Yet they'll find some information that seems inscrutable. What follows is a guide for deciphering power bills — particularly for Xcel Energy customers.

With 1.3 million electricity customers in Minnesota, Minneapolis-based Xcel is by far the state's largest power provider.

Be they big or small, though, electricity providers seek a balance on their bills.

"I have seen a lot of different bills from a lot of different utilities, and some are way too detailed, and some have just the minimum," said Adam Heinen, vice president of regulatory services at Dakota Electric and a former utility analyst at the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Key terms in Xcel Energy's electric bill

1. Basic Service Charge Fixed. Gives you access to electricity.

2. Energy Charge Variable. Based on your monthly electricity consumption times the price of power.

3. Fuel Cost Charge Variable. Utility's fuel and power purchase costs passed down to you without markup.

4. Sales True Up Variable. Xcel's actual electric sales are "trued-up" to forecast sales; if actual is higher, you get a credit; lower, a surcharge.

5. Affordability Charge Fixed. Funds efforts to help low-income customers pay bills.

6. Resource Adjustment Variable. Includes charges for transmission; energy efficiency programs; and some renewable energy projects.

7. Interim Rate Adjustment Interim rate increase (on energy charge) granted by regulators before a rate case is settled. If final rate is below interim, future bills are credited. If higher, no charges are added.

8. City Fees Denotes "franchise" fees that cities charge utilities for use of rights-of-way. Can be a flat fee or based on percent of energy charge.

First things first

The first line on most electricity bills is a fixed "basic service" charge that doesn't change with usage.

"For the consumer, this is the cost of having electricity in your home," said Carmen Carruthers, outreach director for the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota, a ratepayer advocacy group. "But it varies significantly."

Xcel Energy charges $8 per month to customers served by overhead power lines; $10 for those with underground lines. The state's other investor-owned utilities — Duluth-based Minnesota Power and Fergus Falls-based Otter Tail Power — have basic charges of $8 and $9.75, respectively.

Dakota Electric's basic charge is $10, low for a retail power cooperative. Dakota, with about 110,000 customers, is the state's only electric co-op whose rates aren't set by its board. Instead, it's regulated by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which aims to keep a lid on basic service charges.

Farmington-based Dakota is the second largest of Minnesota's 50 power co-ops, which together serve around 700,000 households. Ramsey-based Connexus, the largest with 141,000 customers, has a basic monthly service charge of $13.50.

Most retail power co-ops' service charges are considerably higher than investor-owned utilities' — as much as $30 to $40 per month for some, Carruthers said.

That's because most co-ops are largely rural, and have far fewer customers per power-line mile to cover fixed costs. On the other hand, co-op customers usually get an annual bill credit for profit-sharing.

"Co-op bills generally look simpler," Carruthers said.

Now the largest cost

An "energy" charge is another foundation of any electric bill — and a customer's largest single cost.

It is based on the amount of energy a customer uses multiplied by the price of power, with both measured in kilowatt hours. Power providers usually spell out the equation on your bill; Xcel adds the term "energy charge."

Xcel's bill notes a "summer" energy charge — which lasts from June through September — and a "winter" charge. The summer rate is 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour — or 17 % — higher, because that's when power demand peaks and wholesale prices rise.

Many co-ops have a higher summer rate as well, as does Otter Tail Power.

Paying for power generation

Investor-owned utilities pass their fuel costs (for power generation) directly to consumers, a charge based on electricity consumption. Under state law, fuel costs are not marked up by a utility.

On Xcel's bill, fuel cost charges are labeled as such, while they are part of "energy (or resource) adjustment" charges on bills for Minnesota Power and Otter Tail (which respectively have about 145,000 and 62,000 Minnesota customers).

Co-ops have monthly bill adjustments based on fuel and other variable costs incurred by their power supplier. Minnesota retail co-ops rely on wholesale power co-ops, particularly Maple Grove-based Great River Energy, for electricity generation.

Xcel's fuel charge isn't broken out on its bill, but the company provided details to the Star Tribune.

Costs for coal, natural gas and nuclear fuel made up 35% of Xcel's charge in 2022. Another 43% came from net power purchases in wholesale electricity markets, a cost common cost for utilities.

The remaining 22% of Xcel's fuel charge stems from Minnesota's legislatively mandated Community Solar Garden program, which is aimed at people and organizations that want solar without setting up their own panels.

The solar gardens are developed and owned by independent energy companies. Xcel buys their power and administers the program but makes no profit. Under state law, Xcel bills all residential customers — and most other customers — for the program's costs.

Xcel's bill also has a separate "resource adjustment" line, which captures costs beyond fuel that are contained in PUC-approved "riders" — charges that aren't set out in rates. Xcel doesn't break out riders on its bills, but provided details.

A transmission rider comprises 20% of Xcel's resource adjustment charge; another 20% comes from a Conservation Improvement Program (CIP) rider. By state law, investor-owned utilities must have CIP programs, which fund energy-efficiency initiatives.

About 55% of Xcel's resource adjustment charge is for Minnesota's Renewable Energy Standard, which the Legislature created in 2007. It requires investor-owned utilities to get a portion of power from renewables; they can recover some of those costs through a rider.

Some mandated fees and taxes

Customers of some investor-owned utilities will also see an "affordability" surcharge on their bills. For Xcel, it's a flat 98 cents per month. This charge funds state-mandated programs to help low-income customers defray electricity costs.

Rounding out your electric bill is list of government fees and taxes, usually topped by the state's 6.875 % general sales tax. The state tax, however, doesn't apply from November through April for consumers whose main source of home heating is electricity.

Some utility bills will include small taxes from counties, transit authorities and cities. Many municipalities also have "franchisee fees," which can be flat or based on a percentage of your bill before taxes.

In Minneapolis, residents pay a half-cent sales tax and a 5% franchisee fee. Cities with flat monthly franchise fees usually charge $1.50 to $3.

Cities levy franchise fees on utilities for use of public rights of way, but the charges are passed down to customers. Municipalities are increasingly using franchisee fees as a source of funding: They're usually easier to implement than tax increases.

Some customers will have bill disputes. The PUC's Consumer Affairs Office has received 1,255 electricity billing complaints since 2017. It can be reached by e-mail at consumer.puc@state.mn.us or by phone at 651-296-0406 or 800-657-3782.

For consumers, looking to better understand their electricity bills – and how to reduce them – the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota can help. Contact Carruthers at carmenc@cubminnesota.org or call 651-300-4701, ext. 2.

Harley-Davidson’s Serial 1 unveils new electric mountain bike, this time with suspension - Electrek.co

mivo.indah.link

Serial 1, the electric bicycle brand spun off from Harley-Davidson’s own internal e-bike development, has just unveiled its new SWITCH/MTN electric mountain bike. The announcement comes just a few short weeks after the brand unveiled its BASH/MTN e-bike.

The BASH/MTN used a similar-looking frame design to the rest of Serial 1’s e-bikes.

While the shared frame design created with hydroformed aluminum tubes and sporting internally routed wires and cables has largely won praise in the industry, the BASH/MTN bike unveiled a few weeks ago left many scratching their heads and wondering why the trail bike’s frame was paired to a rigid fork.

As it turned out Serial 1 already had a front suspension bike – commonly referred to as a hardtail – in the works, which the company rolled out this morning.

The brand described the SWITCH/MTN in its own words, saying, “Extremely off-road capable, SWITCH/MTN has the performance to satisfy an expert rider, but careful attention to fit and fine details ensure that our latest eMTB is just as accessible and accommodating for riders who are just beginning their off-road adventure too.”

serial 1 switch/mtn harley

Serial 1’s brand director Aaron Frank went further, detailing why Serial 1 doubled down on its expanding off-road direction:

The vast majority of our world is unpaved. Fire roads, Jeep trails, singletrack paths, terrain parks, ski hills, state forests—there are so many great destinations to explore on two wheels and SWITCH/MTN, with its powerful motor, large-capacity battery, fully adjustable front suspension, and wide-ratio 1×12 drivetrain, has the all the performance and capability to take you anywhere you want to go.

If many of the parts look familiar next to Serial 1’s other urban e-bikes, that’s because they share the same DNA. The SWITCH/MTN is built on a similar foundation, including the same 90 Nm mid-drive Brose S Mag motor and proprietary in-frame 529 Wh removable battery developed in part by Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire motorcycle engineers.

The bike has new off-road geometry though, helped by Suntour’s premier ZERON35BOOST AIR fully adjustable suspension fork, high-volume Michelin E-Wild knobby tires, and a TranzX dropper seat post to let riders dynamically adjust their seat height at different points along the trail.

The mountain bike drivetrain includes components from SRAM’s SX Eagle lineup, such as a 1×12 gear setup combined with an electric bike-specific single-click trigger shifter.

Braking comes from high-end TRP Slate T4 hydraulic disc brakes that feature four pistons and are specifically designed for electric mountain bikes.

They bite down on large 203 mm rotors that are a full 2.3 mm thick, all but eliminating the chances of brake fade when bombing long downhill segments.

Lighting comes from Serial 1’s in-house designed BAF (Bright As F***) headlamp and high-visibility RAT (Rearward Awareness Technology) combination tail and brake lights that are built right into the frame near the rear dropouts.

Coming from someone who has accidentally stared directly down the barrel of that headlight (and barely lived to tell), I can confirm that the name is apt.

The SWITCH/MTN is also app controlled, taking advantage of the recently announced partnership with Google Cloud to make the bike more connected than ever. And to keep your phone charged up, the bike includes a 10W USB-C charging port on the handlebars.

The new model is available in four sizes of S/M/L/XL, with the L size weighing in at 53 lb. (24 kg).

Pricing starts at $4,499, and the bike is available now either online or at various Harley-Davidson and LiveWire dealerships.

While we haven’t had a chance to try the new Serial 1 electric mountain bikes yet, you can take a look below at our first ride on the company’s street-oriented models when we took them for a spin in Milwaukee before their public release.
