MotorTrend shows off Rivian’s electric adventure truck in detail - The Verge

mivo.indah.link

Rivian’s R1T electric pickup truck is finally set to ship next month after a series of delays — roughly three years after it debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Ahead of the launch, though, MotorTrend got to spend a handful of days with the all-electric adventure truck, and the team there came away impressed by its performance. What’s more, they offer one of the best looks at the R1T’s interior, which borrows as much from Tesla as it does from other high-end off-road-focused vehicles.

None of this is exactly surprising — Rivian has actually been quite open about the development of the R1T since its debut, regularly posting its own articles, photos, and videos along the way — but the truck features two large, crisp displays on the dashboard, In the preproduction version MotorTrend tested, those screens were surrounded by a wood-grain dashboard with silver accents.

There are just two physical buttons on the steering wheel, which resemble the scroll wheels Tesla employs in its cars. That means a lot of the controls are routed through the touchscreen. Some people may not like that, though Tesla has proven that it’s not an approach that will hurt sales. But the R1T is supposed to be just as capable off-road as it is on the highway or city streets, and tapping a touchscreen while rumbling through the woods seems like it could get tricky.

It looks like all of the R1T’s exterior storage compartments can be opened through the touchscreen, like the massive front trunk, the doors to the “gear tunnel” that sits between the cab and the bed, and the tonneau cover. The main touchscreen is also where you’ll be able to toggle between the R1T’s suite of drive modes or adjust the ride height.

Over the years, Tesla has sort of redefined what “luxury” means in a modern car — or at the very least, it has been able to find buyers who care more about technology and minimalistic design than they do about the kinds of traditional luxury touches found in something like a Mercedes-Benz. Rivian looks like it’s going to try to straddle those two worlds a bit with the R1T, with the added complexity of appealing to buyers who want to use its vehicles in truly rough settings. We won’t know how that plays out until the first customers receive and start using their trucks next month, but MotorTrend seems to have stumbled on one potentially risky compromise: there are just two cupholders in the front seats.

Best Buy is now selling electric bikes, scooters, and mopeds — in store and online - The Verge

mivo.indah.link

Best Buy is cruising into the electric mobility space with the announcement that it intends to sell e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds, both in stores and online. The retailer is collecting some of the best known names in lightweight electric vehicles, including Unagi, Bird, Segway-Ninebot, Super73, and Swft.

Customers interested in buying something right now can visit BestBuy.com to browse the company’s selection. And starting in October, 10 Best Buy stores in nine locations — Austin, Texas; Los Angeles; Miami; New York; Orlando, Florida; Puerto Rico; San Francisco; Seattle; and Tampa, Florida — will start carrying e-bikes and scooters in stock.

It’s a huge move by a major big-box store that should help steer more customers to e-bikes and scooters, especially as the pandemic has spurred a boom in sales. Best Buy clearly sees an opportunity to dominate the space, especially in a market saturated with similar-looking products with little to differentiate them aside from brand names and price. Amazon sells a variety of e-bikes and scooters, but it lacks a brick-and-mortar presence where customers can physically interact with the products.

The question is how Best Buy’s emergence as a bike and scooter retailer will affect bottlenecks in the supply chain. Bike shops across the country experienced record sales in the months that followed lockdown, with many selling out completely by the summer. Manufacturer warehouses also had large amounts of empty shelves. Year-over-year sales of bikes for the 12 months ending in April 2021 were up 57 percent, reaching $6.5 billion across both large-format and specialty retailers, according to NPD. Today, ordering an e-bike or scooter online typically translates to a 3–4 month wait for delivery, at best.

Many bike and scooter companies, especially those that only deal in electric, sell their products directly to consumers, mostly through their own websites and often with a variety of added extras, like assembly instructions and accessories. Best Buy could allow customers to compare prices and products, especially if their product list grows longer and more diversified.

It remains to be seen whether Best Buy can establish itself as a trusted brand in the micromobility marketplace. Shipping e-bikes and scooters through the mail to customers is a fraught business, as VanMoof’s top executives recently admitted in an interview with The Verge. The Dutch brand has been plagued with delivery issues, with many customers reporting scuffs and damage on their bikes that occurred during shipping.

In addition, Best Buy is offering at-home assembly and fine-tuning for e-bikes through its Geek Squad mobile services for $99.99. Those services include adjusting brakes, seat heights, and handlebars. The arrival of e-bikes and scooters is just in time for Best Buy’s Labor Day sale, during which customers can save up to $300 on select e-transportation products, the company says.

“There’s been incredible innovation in the e-transportation space, and we know more customers are looking for ways to efficiently and sustainably commute,” said Frank Bedo, senior vice president at Best Buy, in a statement. “As we grow this selection, we look forward to helping customers find the right products to fit their needs and supporting them as they hit the road safely.”

To be sure, this is sure to put further pressure on local bike shops, which, before the pandemic, have been struggling to compete with low-cost offerings from Amazon. People who own local bike shops are often more knowledgeable about e-bikes and scooters than big-box employees. And they offer maintenance, tuning, and a variety of other services that stores like Best Buy typically do not.

Motional reveals its Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric robotaxi - TechCrunch

mivo.indah.link

Motional revealed Tuesday the first images of its planned robotaxi, a Hyundai all-electric Ioniq 5 SUV that will be the centerpiece of a driverless ride-hailing service the company wants customers to be able to access starting in 2023 through the Lyft app.

The purpose-built vehicle, which will be assembled by Hyundai, is integrated with Motional’s autonomous vehicle technology, including a suite of more than 30 sensors including lidar, radar and cameras that can be seen throughout the interior and exterior. That sensing system provides 360 degrees of vision, and the ability to see up to 300 meters away, according to Motional.

The company, which was born out of a $4 billion joint venture with Aptiv and Hyundai, intentionally showcases the numerous sensors, president and CEO Karl Iagnemma said in a recent interview.

“We see so many competitors bending over backwards to try to hide this sensor suite and conceal it in these big plastic casings,” Iagnemma told TechCrunch. “And the fact is, you can’t hide the sensors. They need to be where they need to be and they’re an important part of the car and a key part of the technology. So our strategy was to celebrate the sensors, and to adapt the design language of the vehicle and carry that through the design of the integrated sensor suite.”

Motional has not announced where it will launch its first driverless robotaxi service. It’s likely that it will be in one of the cities it currently is testing and validating its technology, a list that includes Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.

Motional-Hyundai robotaxi Ioniq 5

The base of Motional’s robotaxi is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, an electric vehicle revealed in February with a consumer release date expected later this year. The consumer version will not be equipped with Motional’s autonomous vehicle technology. Unlike some AV developers, Motional didn’t chose a  shuttle design or even a larger van for its first robotaxi.

Iagnemma said that the company’s research shows the vast majority of taxi or ride-hailing trips are for two or fewer passengers. The Ioniq 5 is the right size vehicle for Motional’s use case, he added.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle based off the automaker’s dedicated battery electric vehicle platform called the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The vehicle — both the consumer and robotaxi version — is equipped with an 800-volt electrical system. This higher voltage system is able to supply the same amount of power as the more common 400-volt with less current. The 800-volt system, which debuted in the all-electric Porsche Taycan, is lighter, more efficient and allows the vehicle to charge at a faster rate.

That fast charging rate will be an important benefit for Motional’s robotaxi service.

The robotaxi version of the Ioniq 5 will be assembled by Hyundai, a noteworthy detail, Iagnemma said.

“This is vehicle that will come off the assembly line looking, as you see it in the pictures,” Iagnemma said. “This is not a scenario where we’ll take a base vehicle, move it to a different line, take the components off and then reintegrate or retrofit it.

Inside the robotaxi are displays to allow riders to interact with the vehicle during their ride, such as directing the robotaxi to make an extra stop, according to the company.

The robotaxi still has a steering wheel and other features found in traditional vehicles operated by a human driver. Riders will not be permitted to sit in the driver seat.

Amazon’s favorite electric vehicle company Rivian is going public - Vox.com

mivo.indah.link

Late last week, Rivian filed for an initial public offering. The 12-year-old electric vehicle manufacturer, which is backed by Amazon and considered one of the biggest threats to Tesla, is seeking a valuation as high as $80 billion. That would make Rivian one of the world’s most valuable automakers, worth billions more than Ford or GM — and its trucks aren’t even on the road yet. Rivian’s first vehicle, a $73,000 pickup, is expected to start shipping in September, and a second model, a $75,500 seven-seat SUV, is supposed to be released next year.

In some ways, Rivian’s timing is good. President Joe Biden recently issued an executive order that called for electric vehicles to account for half of all new auto sales in the United States by 2030, and a growing number of legacy automakers have committed to shifting their production to electric vehicles in the next two decades.

But as the world continues to struggle with the pandemic, Rivian faces some serious challenges. A shortage of semiconductors has caused delays and production halts across the auto industry. There also aren’t that many charging stations available across the US, leaving some potential EV buyers worried about running out of juice.

“It’s a big deal that more public infrastructure is available,” Jeremy Michalek, an engineering and public policy professor at Carnegie Mellon, told Recode. ”Probably the first priority is making sure there are enough fast chargers available on highway rest stops so that you can take your vehicle wherever you want to go.”

Like Tesla, Rivian is selling home chargers and developing a nationwide charging network. The company plans to have 10,000 stations available by the end of 2023, many of which will be in remote areas. Also as Tesla has done, Rivian is taking an AI-focused approach to its vehicles. Rivian has invested heavily in its hands-free, semi-autonomous driving technology with a suite of features called Driver+, which sounds a lot like Tesla’s Autopilot. In a lawsuit, Tesla even accused Rivian of stealing its trade secrets after hiring its former employees.

But a big difference between Rivian and Tesla is the type of electric vehicles the two companies are selling. After being founded in 2009 and remaining secretive for years, Rivian announced in 2018 that its first models would be a pickup truck and an SUV meant for off-road driving. That’s a notable difference from Tesla, which has focused primarily on selling cars and crossovers. (Tesla announced its first pickup truck, the Cybertruck, in 2019, but deliveries have been delayed until 2022.)

Rivian is also appealing to commercial clients, including its own influential backers. After participating in two funding rounds for the startup, Amazon last year committed to buying 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian by 2030. Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and three other passengers on Blue Origin’s first flight with humans aboard even rode in a Rivian SUV to the launch site.

Ford, which has its own plans to release an electric version of its popular F-150 pickup truck next year, has also invested more than half a billion dollars into the electric car startup.

There’s no doubt that President Biden is enthusiastic about electric vehicles. The Biden administration has already started to electrify the entire federal fleet of cars, SUVs, and trucks, more than 600,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, the White House and Congressional Democrats are pushing for the Postal Service to purchase as many as 165,000 electric delivery trucks. Biden also wants to allocate $174 billion to build 500,000 electric vehicle chargers across the country. (Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also promised to open Tesla Superchargers to electric vehicles from other manufacturers.)

But while EVs are getting more popular globally, the US faces slower growth than China or Europe. Last year, global electric vehicle sales grew by 41 percent, according to the International Energy Agency, an intergovernmental energy policy advising organization. While sales of electric vehicles in the US trail behind those in China and Europe, sales of hybrid cars are growing, a sign that more consumers could warm to electric vehicles down the line.

In a recent Pew survey, some 7 percent of Americans said they owned an electric or hybrid vehicle, and 39 percent said they’d consider buying one. The higher price of EVs is certainly a contributing factor to the slower adoption rate in the US. But the price of batteries, which are the costliest part of electric vehicles, is falling, so Americans could see cheaper EVs in the future.

Pandemic-era hurdles have also plagued the auto industry. Rivian, which was originally supposed to release its pickup truck in July, twice postponed delivery of the vehicles. Late last month, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told customers who had preordered vehicles that Covid-19 had interfered with everything from “facility construction, to equipment installation, to vehicle component supply (especially semiconductors).” The same chip shortage forced Tesla to rewrite code for its vehicles, and experts are worried that a lack of semiconductors could delay production of the new electric Ford F-150.

Still, if Tesla’s runaway success is any indication, Rivian stands to find eager, outdoorsy customers who want an EV that goes off-road. Considering the present challenges, the company is leaning hard on standing apart from Tesla and the growing number of legacy automakers that want a slice of the EV market. Jeep is expected to release an electric version of its Wrangler by 2023. President Biden has already given one a test drive.

Efficiency Maine eyes Aroostook County for Electric Vehicle Charger Projects - WAGM

mivo.indah.link

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Efficiency Maine is using money they received from a recent lawsuit to fund Electric Vehicle Charging Stations throughout the state, and they have their eyes set on Aroostook County. Newssource 8′s Corey Bouchard has the story.

Michael Stoddard is the Executive Director for Efficiency Maine “The money came to us to try and start building a network of these high speed chargers, that was our first priority. And we started down in parts of the state that have the biggest highways and the most traffic. And we’ve been gradually trying to expand out to cover the whole state. And so the county is next on the list.”

Some Level 2 Charging stations already exist around Houlton, Presque Isle, and Fort Kent. But Efficiency Maine wants to increase the amount of fast charging stations in the county.

Stoddard “level two chargers are 240 volts. Some of the towns have put them in, that’s what fort Kent put into their town hall. That’s what the northern Maine Medical Center put in their parking lot. It’s a slower charger, it will fully charge your car in four or five hours…. The high speed chargers are much bigger, much more expensive, and they will fully charge your car in about an hour.”

One concern that people usually have is the range of electric vehicle for their daily commute.

Stoddard “The battery range on the all electric vehicles is getting better and better. So the typical new car goes more than 200 months. Are you telling me these commute you’re describing are more than 200 miles round trip.”

Stoddard says that comparing routines with Electric Vehicles is less like our regular gas vehicles and more like our cell phone

Stoddard “”you’re in the county, you’re not going to have some of the same challenges folks down in Portland have where they live in an apartment building, and they can’t, they don’t have off street parking …The thing that’s very different about electric cars than the ones we’re used to is that you charge them up at home. overnight. You wake up in the morning, it’s like your cell phone is fully charged. I’m good to go for the day so I don’t need a gas station. Because I didn’t start out my morning at half I started out at full”

Stoddard adds that all of the major vehicle manufacturers have started to transition to primarily producing electric vehicles ahead of the 2030 Mandate by President Biden. Corey Bouchard , Newssource 8

Ola Electric in talks to raise at over $2.75 billion valuation - TechCrunch

mivo.indah.link

Ola Electric is in advanced talks to raise between $250 million to $500 million in a new financing round as the Indian firm looks to scale its electric vehicle manufacturing business in the South Asian market, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Falcon Edge Capital is in advanced talks to the lead the round, which values Ola Electric between $2.75 billion to $3.5 billion (up from $1 billion in its previous fundraise in 2019), sources told TechCrunch, requesting anonymity as the matter is private. Singapore’s Temasek is also holding conversations, the people said.

The talks come at a time when ride-hailing giant Ola, the initial parent firm of Ola Electric, is looking to file for an initial public offering. The firm, which recently raised $500 million, has signed up a few bankers and is looking to file for the IPO later this year, according to a third person familiar with the matter.

Terms of the deal are not final yet so they may change, sources cautioned.

The firm is looking to raise as much as $1 billion, the person said, cautioning that the matter is not final. Indian media first wrote about the IPO talks.

Earlier this month, Ola Electric launched its first electric scooter, called Ola S1, that is priced at 99,999 Indian rupees, or $1,350. The electric scooter offers a range of 121 kilometers (75 miles) on a complete charge.

“Ola is the best product in the market currently with features significantly better than peers. Incumbents, despite all their resources have launched products which appear as another variant of an ICE product and lack the punch. We have in general been specifically disappointed with both Bajaj and TVS on this front,” analysts at Bernstein wrote to clients in a report earlier this month.

“While startups such as Ather have made significant efforts on the product, the steep pricing, significantly slow pace of manufacturing scale up, restricted launch in only a few cities earlier were the key drivers for weak sales. The crucial differentiators for Ola are the software based features, range, peak speeds, and acceleration (fastest EV scooter now), boot space, and colour options.”

Ola / Ola Electric declined

The story was updated with additional details.

SOUTH PARK TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A billboard in South Park Township is garnering a lot of attention.

A slide on an electronic billboard at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Broughton Road says that masks don’t work and urges people to stop getting tested for COVID-19.

Doctors say misinformation during the pandemic has been dangerous.

“I think that as people are getting their information about masks, I would look to reputable public health sources and not what we’re seeing on Facebook and being talked about at some of these school board meetings,” said Dr. Nathan Shively, an Infectious Disease Specialist with Allegheny Health Network.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in June found much of the misinformation spread on social media has been amplified by bots that have been overlooked by fact-checkers.

VA-DoD electronic records system at Step 1 | The American Legion - The American Legion

mivo.indah.link
VA-DoD electronic records system at Step 1
Dr. Lisa Flynn, chief medical officer for Cerner Government Services, speaks to the Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission meeting during The American Legion 102nd National Convention at the Phoenix on Saturday, Aug. 28. Photo by Ben Mikesell/The American Legion

The Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., is step one in a long-awaited march toward a lifetime electronic system that aims to finally end the days of brown folders, floppy disks, faxes, microfiche, lost, burnt or scattered military medical records. Missing records, to the frustration of veterans and American Legion service officers trying to help them, can mean the difference between VA disability benefits or none.

Two executives from Cerner Corp., which in 2018 began a planned 10-year project to modernize and integrate VA and DoD medical records, told members of The American Legion’s Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission that the Cerner system is up and running at more than 600 DoD and U.S. Coast Guard sites, but VA’s only live system was installed last fall in Spokane. A timeline for additional VA sites has yet to be announced.

The American Legion has made an integrated DoD-VA medical records system a top priority for over a decade, a point American Legion Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission Chairman Ralph Bozella noted in his introduction of twice-deployed Army Reserve surgeon Dr. Lisa Flynn, chief medical officer of Cerner Government Services, and Army veteran Danielle Applegate, who leads the company’s Veteran and Military Family Engagement program.

“My mind goes back to 2012, at least, when The American Legion had a resolution supporting this electronic health-care records update and the fact that DoD should be working with VA to get something done,” Bozella said. “That’s what this is all about, so a veteran leaves service with their health records intact, and it transfers over to VA.”

Such a transition, estimated to cost $10 billion in 2018 when VA began working with Cerner on it, has so far involved the migration of about 100 billion pieces of VA medical data and the development of some 24 million VA medical records, Flynn told the commission. “We are not quite at our deployment timeline for VA yet, but we are getting there. After 20 years of starting and stopping, we are getting there.”

Cerner’s medical records platform, which Flynn used as a doctor prior to joining the company, is used by more than 650,000 physicians and 2.2 million non-physician providers worldwide. The system collects and maintains complete health records – prescriptions, lab results, doctor’s notations and other data – to inform patients and providers about treatment histories. “We are also increasing features, such as registries, so all of your toxic exposures, we can get that all in your medical record,” Flynn said.

She explained that when she retired from the Army Reserve about 10 years ago, she received a package that contained a brown folder full of medical records, a diskette and some microfiche. That was her military medical record. The diskette, she found, was particularly useless. “I have no idea what’s on that thing because I don’t know anybody that still has a computer with what used to be called an A drive.”

A lifetime integrated records management system will make such outdated packages go “the way of the dinosaurs,” she said. “We are committed, at Cerner, to get this right. The servicemembers, veterans, families, caregivers and survivors deserve this.”

One feature of the system is patient safety, Flynn said. “We have already had nearly 300 opioid prescriptions modified based on an alert that pops up in the system that lets the provider know that the patient – veteran, servicemember, family – may be at risk for opioid-abuse disorder. Three-hundred times that has popped up, and the provider said, ‘You know, maybe I’ll change this prescription and give them something else.’” She added that the Cerner system is online with 46 of the 50 U.S. states, each of which have their own prescription-monitoring programs.

American Legion Veterans Benefits Committee member Thomas Goodin of Missouri asked the Cerner officials about the records of veterans who served before the computer era.  “What about our records? The people who served before the computers – who served in the ‘60s and ‘70s? Our records are scattered everywhere.”

Applegate said the Department of Defense is plowing through the mountain of older records. “The DoD has been working pretty diligently to digitize all of those records,” she said. “From what I understand, every record post-1990 is already digitized, and there about 12 million outstanding records that are on the list to keep going. It is a process. You are not forgotten. It is a work in progress.”

Goodin also mentioned the 1973 fire in St. Louis that destroyed some 17 million military records and the burden that placed on veterans seeking documentation to prove service-connected health conditions later in life.

“The value of going to an enterprise-wide single system across two and three large government agencies is that we will never have to worry about that again,” Applegate said. “If you break that floppy disk, if you lose that microfiche or something burns down, we will have a backup of a backup across not one, but two government agencies.”

Also, in response to a question from commission member Jennifer Havlik of Minnesota, Applegate assured the group that the system is protected against any kind of catastrophic data meltdown. “The value of Cerner is that we are a global company. We’re on every continent. We have data backed up six ways to Sunday. We haven’t had any data loss to date, and we don’t expect any in the future.”

The system may only be functioning in one VA health-care system at the moment, but Flynn says that first step is working and has proven helpful during the COVID-19 vaccination process. “With 600 DoD sites live and one VA site live, with its CBOCs (community-based outpatient clinics), we already have 700 patients who have seen that system working. We had 320 patients who got their first COVID shot at either VA or DoD, and they got their second COVID shot at the other department, because the systems talk to each other. We’re pretty excited about it.”

As for future sites where the integrated system will go live, Flynn said news is expected soon. “We have heard that we should be expecting a new deployment schedule for VA hospitals in the very near future.”

China Roundup: Beijing takes aim at algorithm, Xiaomi automates electric cars - TechCrunch

mivo.indah.link

Hello and welcome back to TechCrunch’s China roundup, a digest of recent events shaping the Chinese tech landscape and what they mean to people in the rest of the world.

The biggest news of the week again comes from Beijing’s ongoing effort to dampen the influence of the country’s tech giants. Regulators are now going after the exploitative use of algorithm-powered user recommendations. We also saw a few major acquisitions this week. Xiaomi is acquiring an autonomous vehicle startup called Deepmotion, and ByteDance is said to be buying virtual reality hardware startup Pico.

Algorithmic regulation

Beijing has unveiled the draft of a sweeping regulation to rein in how tech companies operating in China utilize algorithms, the engine of virtually all lucrative tech businesses today from short videos and news aggregation to ride-hailing, food delivery and e-commerce. My colleague Manish Singh wrote an overview of the policy, and here’s a closer look at the 30-point document proposed by China’s top cyberspace watchdog.

Beijing is clearly wary of how purely machine-recommended content can stray away from values propagated by the Communist Party and even lead to the detriment of national interests. In its mind, algorithms should strictly align with the interest of the nation:

Algorithmic recommendations should uphold mainstream values… and should not be used for endangering national security (Point 6).

Regulators want more transparency on companies’ algorithmic black boxes and are making them accountable for the consequences of their programming codes. For example:

Service providers should be responsible for the security of algorithms, create a system for… the review of published information, algorithmic mechanisms, security oversight… enact and publish relevant rules for algorithmic recommendations (Point 7).

Service providers… should not create algorithmic models that entice users into addiction, high-value consumption, or other behavior that disrupts public orders (Point 8).

The government is also clamping down on discriminative algorithms and putting some autonomy back in the hands of consumers:

Service providers… should not use illegal or harmful information as user interests to recommend content or create sexist or biased user tags (Point 10).

Service providers should inform users of the logic, purpose, and mechanisms of the algorithms in use (Point 14).

Service providers… should allow users to turn off algorithmic features (Point 15).

The regulators don’t want internet giants to influence public thinking or opinions. Though not laid out in the document, censorship control will no doubt remain in the hands of the authorities.

Service providers should not… use algorithms to censor information, make excessive recommendations, manipulate rankings or search results that lead to preferential treatment and unfair competition, influence online opinions, or shun regulatory oversight (Point 13).

Like many other aspects of the tech business, certain algorithms are to obtain approval from the government. Tech firms must also hand over their algorithms to the police in case of investigations.

Service providers should file with the government if their recommendation algorithms can affect public opinions or mobilize civilians (Point 20).

Service providers… should keep a record of their recommendation algorithms for at least six months and provide them to law enforcement departments for investigation purposes (Point 23).

If passed, the law will shake up the fundamental business logic of Chinese tech companies that rely on algorithms to make money. Programmers need to pore over these rules and be able to parse their codes for regulators. The proposed law seems to have even gone beyond the scope of the European Union’s data rules, but how the Chinese one will be enforced remains to be seen.

Lei Jun bets on autonomous cars

In Xiaomi’s latest earnings call, the smartphone maker said it will acquire DeepMotion, a Beijing-based autonomous driving startup, to aid its autonomous driving endeavor. The deal will cost Xiaomi about $77.3 million, and “a lot of that will be in terms of stock” and “a lot of these payments will be deferred until certain milestones are hit,” said Wang Xiang, Xiaomi president on the call.

Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun earlier hinted at the firm’s plan to enter the crowded space. On July 28, Lei announced on Weibo, China’s Twitter equivalent, that the company is recruiting 500 autonomous driving experts across China.

Automation has become a selling point for China’s new generation of electric vehicle makers, often with companies conflating advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) with Level 4 autonomous driving. Such overstatements in marketing material mislead consumers and make one question the real technical capability of these nascent EV players.

Xiaomi has similarly unveiled plans to manufacture electric cars through a separate car-making subsidiary. The ADAS capabilities brought by DeepMotion are naturally a nice complement to Xiaomi’s future cars. As Wang explained:

We believe that there’s a lot of synergies with [DeepMotion’s ADAS] technology with our EV initiatives. So I think it tells you a couple of points. Number one is, we will roll out EV business. And I said in our prepared remarks, we’ve been very focused on hiring the right team for the EV business at this point in time, formulating our strategy, formulating our product strategy, et cetera, et cetera. But at the same time, we are not afraid to apply it and integrate other teams if we find that those will help us accelerate our plan right.

It’s noteworthy that DeepMotion, founded by Microsoft veterans, specializes in perception technologies and high-precision mapping, which puts it in the vision-driven autonomous driving camp. A number of major Chinese EV makers rely on consumer-grade lidar to automate their cars.

ByteDance goes virtual

ByteDance is said to be buying Beijing-based VR hardware maker Pico for 5 billion yuan ($770 million), according to Chinese VR news site Vrtuoluo. ByteDance could not be immediately reached for comment.

Advanced VR headsets are often expensive due to the cost of high-end processors. Experts observe that most VR hardware makers are yet to enter the mass consumer market. They are hemorrhaging cash and living off generous venture money and corporate deals.

ByteDance might be buying a money-losing business, but Pico, one of the major VR makers in China, provides a fast track for the TikTok parent to enter VR manufacturing. As the world’s largest short video distributor and an aggressive newcomer to video games, ByteDance has no shortage of creative talent. We will see how it works on producing virtual content if the Pico deal goes through.

Omaha-metro nonprofit and recycle center team up for electronic drop-off - WOWT

mivo.indah.link

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A steady stream of cars rolled through the parking lot at Dingman’s Collison Center near 144th and Industrial Road Saturday morning.

The contents, unused electronics, laptops, computers, cell phones, tablets, and more were turned over to Nebraska Recycles and the Open Door Mission. Nearly 10,000 pounds of old equipment that won’t end up in the local landfills were collected in four hours.

“We demanufacture everything, break it back down and then companies use all the components to build new stuff from it. The metal gets recycled, the wires get recycled, plastic gets recycled. Even our cardboard is reused, we shred it into packaging material,” said Jack Doerr.

Along with dropping off old electronics were a lot of cash donations to the Open Door Mission.

Terry Randall was one of those donors. He says the Open Door Mission helped him several years ago and he hasn’t forgotten how it changed his life.

“Kind of let me know that maybe this is the way that you can end up and you need to change. And I changed. And I credit Open Door Mission for this also God who changed my heart because we can’t change it on our own.”

“It’s obviously really important because you’re serving two purposes, right here. You’re keeping stuff out where it doesn’t belong and you’re giving back,” said Stan Meier.

“The Lord has given me a lot and giving something back to other human beings or society is my duty and responsibility,” said Subhash Bhatia.

Jack Doerr is with Nebraska Recycles. He says the hard drives are destroyed in these devices.

“Everybody hears about all the data, security stuff going on its just not a good thing to throw it in the landfill. Who knows who is rummaging through trash and stuff, you see the guys that kind of go through the trash and pick out metal and stuff like that so they just don’t want to leave anything with personal family stuff on it.”

This duo purpose event not only cleared unused clutter from donors’ homes but it kept valuable information safe and hazardous materials from reaching the landfill.

The event also brought in about $2,000 for the Open Door Mission.

Solana Beach to consider stricter electric requirements for new construction - Del Mar Times

mivo.indah.link

Solana Beach City Council members began crafting a stricter set of environmental standards for new construction and major remodels during their Aug. 25 meeting.

An ordinance that codifies those new standards, known as Reach Codes because they reach beyond statewide minimum standards, will be considered by the council during one of its September meetings. The council also has to define the criteria of a major remodel that would trigger enforcement of the new standards.

“By adding our voices, Sacramento will realize that it has buy-in from the entire state to do what is necessary,” said Mary Yang, a member of the city’s Climate Action Commission.

Some of the proposed measures in the Reach Codes include on-site solar electricity generation systems in newly constructed commercial properties; electric-only space conditioning, water heating and clothes dryers in new construction; and systems that allow for the electrification of nonelectric appliances in new construction.

“As the electric grid becomes greener and cleaner, switching from natural gas to electric is one way for a community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Rimga Viskana, a senior management analyst for the city of Solana Beach, said during a presentation to the council.

Many residents wrote to the city in support of adopting Reach Codes for new construction.

“I firmly believe that no building or remodel should be permitted with any gas consuming appliance,” wrote Chris Wakeham, who added that he uses electrical amenities at a home he recently constructed in Solana Beach.

Katie Crist, a public health researcher at UC San Diego, wrote that the climate crisis has led to “unprecedented global warming that is causing such harm to our planet, our communities and individual health.”

“Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the US and is compounded by environmental pollution from vehicles, wildfires and indoor gas exposure,” she said.

So far, 49 California cities have adopted Reach Codes, according to a list compiled by the Sierra Club. Encinitas is also in the process of adopting them.

In response to some concerns raised by others, Solana Beach City Councilman Dave Zito emphasized that the new Reach Codes would apply only to new construction.

“This isn’t going around to existing businesses and existing residences and telling people that they have to change,” Zito said. “It’s only when people come to the city saying we’re going to do a very expensive project that is going to cost a lot of money we would then say these are the types of things you will have to include.”

Police find electronic signal-jamming device inside California home - KIRO Seattle

mivo.indah.link

MORGAN HILL, Calif. — After noticing interference for months, police located and disabled an electronic signal-jamming device set up in a California home.

>> Read more trending news

Morgan Hill police said the Santa Clara County Emergency Communications Department reported a signal was “disrupting, impeding and interfering” with public safety calls, KTVU reported.

Police said officials had noticed interference at a communication tower for the last six months. In the last week, it had gotten worse with residents reporting disruptions to Wi-Fi, satellite and cell phone service.

Investigators traced the approximate source of the signal to a home, the Morgan Hill Times reported. Police tried to contact the resident through a doorbell security camera but got no response. They later got a search warrant and entered the house. Once inside, officers lost all radio communication. They found two signal jammers, disabled them and immediately regained service.

No arrests have been made. Investigators are analyzing the equipment. The resident could face charges related to disrupting public safety frequencies, KTVU reported.

“I can’t imagine a Joe Blow citizen having that equipment to be used for anything other than malicious intent,” Morgan Hill Mayor Rich Constantine told KTVU.

Awesomely Weird Alibaba EV of the Week: Knockoff Ford Model T Electric Car - Electrek

mivo.indah.link

Most of the fun and wacky electric vehicles I discover while wasting time perusing the infinite abyss of creativity that is the Alibaba shopping site are of the ultra modern variety. But every now and again something that is decidedly vintage catches my eye, as was the case with this funny little electric car that appears to be heavily inspired by the original Ford Model T. And fortunately for whatever random factory seems to be hawking this hot mess, it tickled my fancy enough to land it a coveted spot as the Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week!

This isn’t exactly the first vintage-styled electric car to hand-crank my starter.

I’ve stumbled upon other hidden EV gems such as a distinctly debonair British roadster and a quaint electric horseless carriage fit for Cinderella herself.

But none of those would have one of America’s most celebrated bigots, Henry Ford, rolling over in his grave more than this awesome little electric Model T knockoff.

It might not have the same giant wagon wheels or leak as much (or any) oil as the original, but damn if it doesn’t have charm in spades.

Chugging along at its top speed of 30 km/h (19 mph), it’s only about half as fast as the original. It’s also rocking a third of the original’s motor power, with just a modest 5 kW electric motor on its rear axle.

So horsepower for horsepower, I’ll chalk that up as a win for the Chinese version here.

It doesn’t quite match the original Model T’s range, as the imitation T only packs a 7.2 kWh battery that is sufficient for a claimed 100 km (62 mi) per charge. The good news is that it will do those miles without vibrating and shaking its occupants until the contents of their change purse is lost in the upholstery.

Those batteries are also lead acid instead of lithium-ion, which I can only assume is a throwback to the former car’s era. The original Model T debuted just over a century ago, and that lead acid battery technology is definitely period correct.

But even though this knockoff doesn’t exactly excite the senses with its power, speed or range, it makes up for it with class.

Check out that gold plated (or more likely gold painted) trim and classy convertible top. And take a gander at those big ol’ headlamps from back when the glass protected an actual oil flame. It even has the old-school folding windshield and a spare tire. You probably wouldn’t even need a jack to change a tire – just grab a fender and lift up one corner of the car.

I also love that slick-looking wooden dashboard and giant steering wheel, which comes complete with power steering. This thing actually looks pretty darn well outfitted. I can’t speak to the quality, of course. That sheet metal might be thinner than paper for all we know. But it definitely looks the part!

Surely these things are meant for novelty purposes, like rental rides in the park or birthday parties. But that’s not how I’d use one.

Imagine the looks you’d get driving this car to the coffee shop. Or picking up a few gallons of paint at Home Depot.

Anyone with money can have a fancy Ferrari or a lifted truck. Driving one of these bad boys around town takes a certain amount of spunk and a distinct lack of giving a flying flip what others think.

And as the sales page on Alibaba tells me, it also takes $6,300 smackeroonies. Fortunately the vendor only requires a minimum order of quantity of one unit.

Booking a $20,000 shipping container though, that’s going to be the trickier part…
