Looking to Relieve Jail Crowding, Sheriff's Office Turns to Electronic Monitoring - Lost Coast Outpost

mivo.indah.link

Screenshot from a video by Attenti, a multinational company that describes itself as “leading the offender-monitoring industry.”

###

At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office will request permission to launch an electronic monitoring program that would allow offenders to be released into the community and tracked with a GPS device rather than serving time in jail.

The request appears on the Consent Calendar portion of the agenda, which means it could get approved early in the meeting, with little or no discussion. But a staff report offers justification for the initiative, noting frequent crowding at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility in the wake of 2011’s Criminal Justice Realignment Act (AB 109), which shifted responsibility for custody of people convicted of certain offenses (deemed non-serious, non-violent, or non-high-risk sex-related) from the state to counties.

In 2018, 2019 and the early part of this year (before COVID-19 hit), the jail’s population averaged more than 90 percent of its rated capacity, according to the report. The electronic monitoring program would keep the jail population lower “while allowing offenders the opportunity to continue to be productive members of the community,” the staff report says.

The program may also wind up saving the county money. In anticipation of this transition, the Sheriff’s Office entered into an agreement with Attenti U.S., Inc., a multinational company that specializes in electronic monitoring. The three-year contract with Attenti could cost up to $50,000, but the county stands to save much more than that on food, clothing and caring for inmates.

As the report notes, “The average cost of incarcerating an individual [at the jail] is $113 per day, while the cost of the electronic monitoring with Attenti is $3.20 daily per person.” The report goes on to do some back-of-the-napkin math: Having 10 participants in the electronic monitoring program would cost the county $960 per month. “If that was sustained for the entire year the total annual fiscal cost would be $11,520.”

Using the county’s own figures, the cost of housing 10 inmates at the jail for a year would exceed $400,000.

The Sheriff’s Office says it will use the electronic monitoring program in conjunction with its existing Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP). Participants, who would need to apply for inclusion, could serve their sentences by being placed on electronic surveillance and working for SWAP one day per week.

VR&E announces national deployment of electronic Virtual Assistant (e-VA) - VAntage Point Blog

mivo.indah.link

VA’s Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Service is deploying its electronic Virtual Assistant (e-VA) to the national stage. e-VA is an artificial intelligence platform, providing modern, streamlined and responsive customer service support to VR&E’s Veterans. Importantly, it automates routine administrative activities for VR&E Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors (VRC) and staff.

New e-VA logo announcing new contact for Veterans in VR&E

Now, Veterans can connect with their VR&E counselors through e-VA!

e-VA is a private and secure platform that streamlines electronic communication through text messaging or email. It provides Veterans with timely responses to basic questions, and allows them to schedule and reschedule appointments, receive automated alerts, follow-up messages and appointment reminders, and submit documentation from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Additionally, all correspondence for a particular Veteran within e-VA will be captured and saved in that Veteran’s record in VR&E’s case management system.

“For our Veterans, e-VA will mean communicating with more flexibility and convenience, scheduling and rescheduling appointments, sending documents securely, and connecting with our counselors and staff via text and email,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “For our VR&E counselors and staff, e-VA will electronically engage and connect with our Veterans, more efficiently handle administrative functions, work with our case management system, and provide management with additional support and reporting tools.”

What does this mean for Veterans?

Through the new application, Veterans will be able to:

  • Communicate with more flexibility and convenience.
  • Obtain timely responses to basic questions.
  • Be able to schedule and reschedule appointments, as needed.
  • Receive automated alerts, follow-up messages and appointment reminders.
  • Submit documents, such as grades, schedules and other important documents.
  • Connect with their counselor via text and/or email.
How to get started with e-VA?

Veterans using VR&E services can opt-in to this new application. To get set up with e-VA, Veterans already in VR&E can expect to receive a text message or an email introducing e-VA in the next few weeks. Veterans must opt-in to start using the optional application. Upon opt-in acceptance, the benefits of e-VA will immediately be made available.

What if a Veteran doesn’t get the text or email?

This new electronic system is only available to Veterans receiving services from VR&E. If a Veteran receiving VR&E services does not receive either a text message or an email introducing e-VA, the Veteran should contact their counselor and ask for that information to be sent to them. The Veteran should also confirm their current smartphone number and email address with their counselor at that time.

Are there other options for connecting with VR&E counselors?

While e-VA is available via text messaging and email, Veterans’ VR&E counselors are still available to assist by phone and/or via tele-counseling. Counselors will resume in-person visits after the national emergency has been lifted.

For questions or additional assistance, please contact a VR&E counselor at the local VA regional office (RO). Veterans can find the closest VA RO at https://www.benefits.va.gov/benefits/offices.asp or call 1-800-827-1000. For more information about VR&E, visit https://www.va.gov/vre.

Revel launches its shared electric mopeds in San Francisco - The Verge

mivo.indah.link

Revel’s shared electric mopeds are now available in San Francisco, with over 430 mopeds scattered across in the city, the company says. Revel has been expanding into new cities across the US this year even as it faces questions about its safety protocols.

Revel isn’t new to the Bay Area; the company also operates in Berkeley and Oakland. But the scooters that are available in San Francisco are not the same as the ones offered in other markets like New York City. The company says the mopeds are custom-designed with new hardware, including a 2960-watt motor “designed to help riders navigate San Francisco’s famous hills.”

The mopeds are serviced and rebalanced by a staff of full-time employees, not independent contractors. That means Revel won’t be affected by California’s gig worker law, AB5, which is currently putting pressure on major companies like Uber and Lyft.

The news of Revel’s San Francisco launch comes over a month after the company temporarily suspended service in New York City in the wake of the deaths of at least three customers. The company recently resumed service with new protective measures for riders like a mandatory in-app safety test and a requirement that all riders take a selfie of themselves wearing a helmet before they’ll be allowed to ride.

In addition to New York City and the Bay Area, Revel also operates in Washington, DC, and Austin, Texas.

2020 Outlook on the Worldwide Electronic Health Information Exchange Market - Technology, Technology Providers, and Market Trends - ResearchAndMarkets.com - Business Wire

mivo.indah.link

DUBLIN--()--The "Electronic Health Information Exchange Market" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

This report examines the technology, technology providers, and market trends in Electronic Health Information Exchange (HIE) services. This report evaluates the current industry trends in HIE products and services. It also identifies the key vendors and their strategies. The report also answers the basic questions: What is an Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR)?, What is an EHR database?, and Why is there a need for an HIE?

Simply stated, an Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a digital version of a patient's paper chart. While many leading companies are increasingly moving towards digital retention of records via EHR databases, information is typically available only within a closed system. In other words, medical facilities that are not part of the same group often cannot exchange data between their EHR systems.

To address this issue, HIE services have developed using current ICT technologies to greatly improve the completeness of patient's records including past medical history, current medications, and other information. Secure data transfer technology allows medical professionals the appropriate, secure access to a patient's vital medical information electronically.

By way of inter-EHR communications and data exchange, HIE services improve provider-patient communication enabling a complete set of patient's records that will have a big effect on care given during patient visits. This improves the speed, quality, safety, and cost of patient care. It also improves the overall health and well-being of consumers while improving the efficiency of healthcare operations.

Most medical information is stored on paper format and is typically found at hospitals, medical offices, patients' homes, etc. When that medical information is needed, it is transferred by mail, fax, or carried by patients to their appointments. HIE systems allow medical professionals and patients to access and securely share a patient's vital medical information electronically.

State’s Electric Utilities Make Plans to Roll Out Smart Meters - NJ Spotlight

mivo.indah.link

Smart meter

In what amounts to a first, all four of the state’s electric utilities have plans to either install smart meters or, in the case of Rockland Electric, have already done so.

Smart meters and advanced metering infrastructure are widely viewed as crucial to building a smarter electric grid — one that can successfully integrate intermittent sources of electricity like solar panels and offshore wind into a more intelligent power grid. It will also give utilities the ability to respond and restore power rapidly when more than a million customers experience outages, such as happened earlier this month during a tropical storm.

So far, that’s largely not the case in New Jersey, with the exception of Rockland Electric’s 74,000 customers, who got smart meters last year under a pilot program approved by the state Board of Public Utilities.

Holding off on smart metering

In the past, state regulators have been reluctant to boost utility customers’ bills by approving smart meters, even though they are widely used in the rest of the country, with more than 90 million homes outfitted with the technology.

“New Jersey has been beyond the curve for years on smart meters,’’ said Doug O’Malley, director of Environment New Jersey. “We’ve underinvested in the electric grid for generations.’’

With the state trying to transition to 100% clean-energy technology, the BPU lifted a two-year-old moratorium on utilities moving to smart meters last February. The agency directed them to file plans within six months, a deadline that came this past Thursday.

This week, both Atlantic City Electric and Jersey Central Power & Light submitted filings with the BPU to build out smart meters for their 500,000 and 1.1 million customers, respectively.

Price tags for smart meters

Atlantic City Electric would invest $220 million over two years, if approved; JCP&L, $418 million over four years.

Public Service Electric & Gas is already in a rate case at the BPU to spend $714 million over five years for its 2.3 million customers. Like other utilities, it says the technology can reduce the duration of power outages, sending a signal to the company when power is lost.

With customers facing a wave of rate increases stemming from the Murphy administration’s shift to clean energy, it is uncertain how extensive those programs will be after scrutiny by the BPU and others.

Rate Counsel Stefanie Brand has concerns, particularly over the utilities’ plans to replace all existing meters, including ones installed in recent years, with new smart meters. “I don’t have a problem with AMI,’’ she said, yet argued it should be done over a period of years, during normal replacement of meters.

“These are very big numbers,’’ Brand said, referring to the cost of replacing every meter in the state. “They are doing it in the most expensive way possible.’’

Utility executives say shifting to smart meters and other infrastructure could lead to customers savings on their utility bills thanks to smarter decisions about when and how they use electricity, and by reducing the duration of outages.

Atlantic City Electric dubbed its program the Smart Energy Network and said it’s critical to connecting its customers to a variety of clean and affordable energy choices.

“A modern energy grid, with the Smart Energy Network as its backbone, will pave the way for more solar energy installations, more robust energy efficiency installations, more charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and more resilient energy infrastructure to help restore service for our customers faster following increasingly common storm events,’’ said Gary Sturbridge, president of ACE.5

Overselling AMI’s benefits?

But Brand said she thought the utilities were overselling the benefits of how quickly service could be restored in storms with AMI technology. “To me, this isn’t going to solve our storm-response problems,’’ she said.

JCP&L minimized the impact of the new technology on customers, saying it will only increase monthly bills for typical customers by 65 cents, effective on Jan. 1, 2022, if approved by the BPU, according to Cliff Cole, a spokesman. Over the duration of the program, costs will rise $4.01, or approximately 3.8 percent.

With all the other filings dealing with clean energy, such as solar, offshore wind and nuclear, Brand said somebody had to pay attention to this. “If we keep piling on, it is going to be an unaffordable system,’’ she said.

Dog joins Riverside County DA’s investigative staff, sniffs out hidden electronic devices - Press-Enterprise

mivo.indah.link

RIVERSIDE — A new police dog will be helping the Riverside County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation sniff out hidden electronic devices, such as those involved in child pornography.

Chewie, an English Labrador who turns 2 in October, is specially trained to locate electronic devices like laptops, thumb drives, memory cards, external hard drives, cell phones and tablets.

The canine is teaming up with the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement/Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

“I am extremely proud to be his handler because of the work we are doing. Knowing that Chewie has the ability to locate electronic storage devices that may contain videos or images of child sexual assault material which can help convict a suspect and ultimately save a child — there is no greater satisfaction,” said Investigator Joel Pabelico, Chewie’s handler.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, the pair already helped locate several electronic storage devices in a Menifee home and garage during a child pornography investigation last week.

See this video for more information about Chewie.

Electric Vehicles Deserve a New EPA Range Test - Car and Driver

mivo.indah.link
2020 porsche taycan turbo s

Marc UrbanoCar and Driver

From the September 2020 issue of Car and Driver.

There are a number of factors that make an EV's EPA range unachievable in real-world driving at the highway speeds where range matters most. For starters, EVs can benefit from the EPA test's speed fluctuations via regenerative braking, which puts energy back into the battery. Most gas-powered vehicles can't do that.

There's another fundamental difference. Every EV in production except the Porsche Taycan has a single reduction ratio, so as speeds rise, their electric motors spin faster and less efficiently. Gas cars have multispeed transmissions with a tall top gear for high-speed cruising at a low, efficient engine speed.

This is why gasoline-powered vehicles regularly beat their EPA highway figures in our real-world 75-mph highway test, yet no EV has even matched its EPA range. An Audi e-tron came closest, missing its label value by 7 percent. A Hyundai Kona Electric is our worst, falling 38 percent short in winter temperatures. Among all EVs we've tested, our real-world range averages 24 percent less than what's on the window sticker.

Even our figures are generous. Car and Driver's 75-mph range assumes an EV can use 100 percent of the battery's available capacity, which isn't practical since limited charging infrastructure makes "coasting in on fumes" a risky gamble. And because batteries charge quickest between about 20 percent and 80 percent capacity and slow considerably at the extremes, it typically doesn't make sense to wait for a complete charge during a road trip. Running the heat or air conditioning can also reduce an EV's range substantially.

All of this means that if you want an EV that can repeatedly drive 200 miles on the highway between charges, you'll need to look for one with an EPA range around 350 miles. That makes the agency's current ratings more misleading than helpful. EV buyers deserve a realistic range test that places more emphasis on high-speed highway driving.

Catrike’s latest Bosch-powered electric recumbent bikes are seriously laid back - Electrek.co

mivo.indah.link

When I say I enjoy a laid back e-bike lifestyle, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind. But I can see the appeal in Catrike’s latest eCAT electric bike line featuring the company’s favorite easy-going recumbent tricycles.

For the uninitiated, recumbent bikes are what you’d get if you mashed up a beach lounge chair and a pedal bicycle.

Instead of riding in a seated position on a bicycle saddle, recumbents offer more of a lawnchair-style seat that is tilted back, leaving the rider nearly horizontal.

And as you might have guessed, an electric recumbent is simply a recumbent bicycle with added power assist from an electric motor and battery. And yes, technically Catrike’s are e-trikes instead of e-bikes since they have a pair of front wheels and single rear wheel in a classic tadpole trike setup.

In the case of Catrike’s eCAT e-bikes, the electric recumbents have been gifted a Bosch e-bike drive unit consisting of a Bosch Active Line Plus electric motor and a 400 Wh Bosch PowerPack battery. There’s also a Bosch Purion LCD display mounted on the left handlebar.

The Bosch Active Line Plus drive unit sports 50 Nm of torque and can power the eCAT electric recumbent bike up to a max speed of 20 mph (32 km/h). Riders can pedal past that speed, but they’ll be on their own as the motor won’t provide any additional assist beyond its top speed.

Under 20 mph (32 km/h) though, the motor can offer a maximum of 270% assist. In other words, for every watt of power you put in, the motor can add around another 2.7 watts.

The motor is technically known as a mid-drive, though the geometry of a recumbent means that it is far from the middle of the bike. Instead, it sticks way out in front of the boom.

The battery required a novel mounting solution as well, with Catrike creating a unique battery mount under the seat to support the lockable and removable Bosch battery.

Catrike says that the 400 Wh battery should be good for 62 miles (100 km) of range. Between the lack of a throttle (Bosch e-bike systems are pedal-assist only) and the lower wind resistance of a recumbent e-bike, that range is likely fairly realistic.

When it comes to pricing, I hope you’re laying down for this (heh, get it?!).

The eCAT line starts at $4,750 and goes as high as $6,750, depending on which model you fancy. Though considering recumbent tricycles are already fairly expensive and the Bosch drive is one of the pricier mid-drive units out there, the pricing isn’t exactly a shocker in this niche market.

What do you think? Are you ready to lay back, kick your feet up, and hit the road? Let us know in the comments below if you could see yourself on a Catrike eCAT electric recumbent.

Amazon adds 1,800 electric delivery vans, this time from Mercedes - Mashable

mivo.indah.link

It's not 100,000 electric delivery vans from new car company Rivian, but Amazon is adding nearly 2,000 new Mercedes vans to its fleet. Instead of diesel or gas-powered vans, however, every vehicle making Amazon deliveries from the German carmaker will be fully electric.

Amazon recently announced a partnership with Mercedes-Benz to incorporate 1,800 new delivery vans into its delivery service across Europe by the end of 2020. Those vans include 1,200 eSprinter vans and 600 eVito vans.

The electric Sprinter van is the newest commercial electric vehicle from Mercedes and is a bigger version of its eVito van, which has 93-mile range. Rivian's e-vans are supposed to start delivering for Amazon in 2021. Its first two vehicles, an electric pickup truck and SUV with 400-mile range, still haven't arrived yet.

Amazon has committed to using more clean energy, so in 2019 it invested in the U.S-based EV startup Rivian and promised to electrify more of its delivery fleet in the U.S. and beyond.

Amazon also established The Climate Pledge to encourage companies to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2040. Mercedes, a company that still sells many internal combustion engine vehicles, signed onto the pledge in August. By the end of 2020, Mercedes will have five all-electric vehicles and 20 plug-in hybrids available in its lineup.

T. Denny Sanford's electronic device center of child pornography investigation - Argus Leader

mivo.indah.link

An electronic device owned by billionaire South Dakota banker T. Denny Sanford has been the center of a months-long child pornography investigation that originally started in the state late last year, according to multiple sources.

The investigation expanded to include other jurisdictions where Sanford has a home, including Arizona and California, and is currently pending with the U.S. Department of Justice for possible criminal action.

ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization, reported the investigation Friday night, citing four anonymous sources.

More: Here's everything you need to know about Sanford Health

Sanford, 84, is a billionaire philanthropist who founded and owned First Premier Bank. He is South Dakota’s wealthiest individual, and he has donated his wealth to various causes here and in other states, including to children’s groups.

Marty Jackley, former South Dakota attorney general, is representing Sanford.

"Although we know very little about any state or federal inquiry relating to Mr. Sanford, we do know those authorities responsible for investigating allegations obviously did not find information or evidence that supported or resulted in any criminal charges," Jackley told the Argus Leader on Friday night.

In late November, Sanford Health, the health system named after Sanford, abruptly canceled an annual birthday party it throws for Sanford, which was to be held Dec. 5 and was to also to celebrate the hospital system's merger with UnityPoint Health. At the time, Sanford Health cited its failed merger with UnityPoint, which had been halted earlier in November, as the reason for canceling the event.

In January, Micah Aberson, Sanford Health’s executive vice president, acknowledged the party was also canceled because Sanford “was not physically feeling up to it and didn’t want the party to happen.”

Sanford's reach extends from banking to healthcare

Sanford made his fortune as founder and owner of First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard, taking full advantage of South Dakota’s lax usury laws to master the subprime credit card industry.

“I could never have accomplished what I’ve accomplished in any other state other than South Dakota,” he told the Argus Leader in 2017.

Sanford’s wealth is estimated at $1.6 billion and would have been higher if not for aggressive and high-profile philanthropy and his pledge to try to “die broke” due to charitable endeavors.

Of the more than $1 billion Sanford donated in his lifetime, the most significant was a $400 million gift in 2007 that changed the name of Sioux Valley Hospital to Sanford Health, established a network of worldwide clinics and initiated a research center with the stated goal of curing a major disease, which turned out to be Type 1 diabetes.

The donation helped signify Sioux Falls’ rise in regional stature while sparking a competitive relationship with Avera Health, setting the stage for a burgeoning health care market with national and global reach.

More: From the archives: Sioux Valley gets hundreds of millions

“I sometimes have to remind people that when they meet (Sanford), they’re talking to the single largest health care philanthropist in the world,” Sanford Health CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft said. “It would be like talking to the Mayo brothers or Johns Hopkins himself.”

Sanford’s giving extended well beyond South Dakota, including a $350 million pledge to National University in California, which renamed itself Sanford National University in July 2020. There have also been a series of gifts to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Florida, the result of a friendship with Jack Nicklaus that brought the champion golfer to Sioux Falls for the Sanford International golf tournament.

By the late 1990s, Sanford’s soaring net worth allowed him to start donating toward children’s health causes, including $2 million to the Children’s Home Society in 1998.

All told Sanford has donated nearly $1 billion to the Sanford Health system, with a 2014 gift of $125 million setting the stage for the Sanford Imagenetics Research Center that opened in 2017.

In 2019, he also gave $55 million to Children's Home Society and donated $3.5 million to help fund the restoration of the historic State Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls in coordination with the city.

Michigan governor extends executive order on electronic notarizations - WDIV ClickOnDetroit

mivo.indah.link

DETROIT – On Friday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-173, which extends her previous order allowing business to be conducted remotely by permitting expanded use of e-notaries and e-signatures.

“Many Michiganders have done their part in the fight against COVID-19 by wearing a mask and practicing physical distancing. But COVID-19 is still a very real threat to our families, our frontline workers, and our economy,” said Whitmer. “This executive order will protect more people during this ongoing public health crisis by reducing unnecessary interactions while providing a pathway for people to conduct business as usual.”

Under Executive Order 2020-173, requirements for in-person notarizations are temporarily suspended and transactions that require a notary to be completed via two-way, real-time audiovisual technology are allowed.

The order also permits the use of electronic signatures in all cases, except in rare circumstances when a physical signature is specifically required by statute. The order takes effect immediately and extends the validity of notary commissions through September 30, 2020.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 100,699 as of Friday, including 6,446 deaths, state officials report.

UL Advances Ability for Electronic Product and Equipment Manufacturers to Quickly Enter Mexico Market - Yahoo Finance

mivo.indah.link

Mexico Ministry of Economy grants UL first mutual recognition agreement to allow electronics product testing outside of Mexico

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 28, 2020 /CNW/ -- UL, a leading global safety science company, today announced that Mexico's Ministry of Economy, General Directorate of Standards (DGN), has granted UL the right to conduct safety and energy efficiency testing globally for electronic products and equipment imported into that country. These include safety tests for audio, video and information technology products and equipment and uninterruptible power systems (UPS) as well as energy efficiency tests for washing machines, household and commercial refrigerators and freezers, motors, lighting, external power supplies and products and equipment requiring stand-by power.

UL Logo (PRNewsFoto/UL)

With the ability now to perform safety and energy efficiency tests at UL or UL-approved laboratories outside of Mexico, according to official Mexico standards, Norma Oficial Mexicana and Oficial Mexico Standard (NOM) and Mexican Standard (NMX), UL can help reduce time and cost to market for product access to the Mexican marketplace.

The safety test designation, a first for any international testing, inspection and certification company, applies to specific products and equipment as identified by the NOM and NMX categories. Product and equipment groups include:

  • NOM-001-SCFI-2018 - Electronic appliances
  • NMX-I-163-NYCE-2016 - Electronic equipment - uninterruptible power systems (UPS).
  • NMX-I-60065-NYCE-2015 - Electronic equipment - audio, video and similar electronic apparatus
  • NMX-I-60950-1-NYCE-2015 - Information technology equipment

According to The World Bank, Mexico – with a population of more than 130 million and a rise in income levels and spending power – has the 11th largest economy in the world and the second largest economy in Latin America.

"With Mexico's rising growth comes a greater demand for more consumables, contributing to an increased need for additional regulatory safety and security oversight," said Carlos Correia, senior vice president and general manager of UL in Latin America. "With this designation from the DGN, UL is now able to meet that need by utilizing our global network of best-in-class laboratories and testing facilities to help electronic product and equipment manufacturers meet necessary Mexico safety and security requirements and pave the way for a swift and smooth Mexico market entry."

In addition to safety tests, the DGN has designated that UL can now perform energy efficiency testing, including requirements for Energy Star or the Canada Standards Association, at UL facilities outside of Mexico. Applicable NOM standards include:

  • NOM-005-ENER-2016 – household washing machines
  • NOM-014-ENER-2004 – air-cooled motors
  • NOM-015-ENER-2012 – household refrigerators and freezers
  • NOM-017-ENER/SCFI-2014 – commercial refrigeration appliances
  • NOM-029-ENER-2017- external power supplies
  • NOM-030-ENER-2016 – LEDs
  • NOM-032-ENER-2013 – equipment and appliances requiring standby power

"We know that navigating the regulatory landscape of global markets is a complex and challenging task. COVID-19 has added another layer of complexity. With this designation, customers can test their products and equipment closer to their production facilities and mitigate delays due to the pandemic," said Helena Wolf, senior director of UL's International Certification division. "We stand ready to address global market access needs, with our experts and facilities throughout the world — to help ensure a streamlined Mexico market entry."

EV startup Bollinger unveils electric delivery van - The Verge

mivo.indah.link

Michigan-based electric truck startup Bollinger Motors hasn’t started production on its rugged electric trucks, the Jeep-like B1 and the B2 pickup, but it’s already rolling out a new vehicle type. This week, the company unveiled the Deliver-E, its all-electric delivery van concept that is slated for production in 2022.

A lot of companies, from legacy automakers to tech startups, are developing their own electric delivery vans right now. But what sets Bollinger apart is the variability of its platform. The EV startup is promising a variety of battery pack sizes, including 70 kWh, 105 kWH, 140 kWh, 175 kWh, and 210 kWh. This will mean customers will have a variety of range-options, prices, and wheelbase sizes to chose from. The front-wheel-drive platform will be engineered to fit Classes 2B, 3, 4, and 5, Bollinger said.

When it eventually graduates from concept to production version, the Deliver-E will have a lot of competition. General Motors is working on an electric delivery van, codenamed “BV1,” that will enter production in late 2021. Mercedes-Benz already has multiple models on the road, and Ford has several versions in the works, including an electric version of its supremely popular Transit van.

Amazon, which has a fleet of tens of thousands of combustion-engine vans making up its massive delivery operation, has ordered 100,000 electric vans from EV startup Rivian (which it is also heavily invested in). Startups like UK-based Arrival (which received investments from UPS and Hyundai) and Chanje (which names FedEx as a customer) are working on electric vans as well. And Waymo, one of the leading autonomous vehicle companies in the world, is working with Fiat Chrysler on the design of a self-driving commercial delivery van based on FCA’s Ram ProMaster.

It’s been three years since Bollinger first introduced its B1 SUV and B2 pickup truck, which were slated to go into production this year. The company now says production has been delayed until the fourth quarter of 2021, with deliveries starting that same quarter and into 2022. The company is aiming to produce between 2,000-2,500 units during this first round of production, a spokesperson said. Both vehicles will start at an eye-popping $125,000 — far off the sub-$100,000 mark that the startup was aiming for when it revealed the B1 back in 2017. Bollinger hasn’t disclosed a price of the Deliver-E van.

Bollinger still has a lot of hurdles to overcome before it can deliver on its production promises. The company, which was founded in 2015, still needs to raise more money and find a manufacturing partner to be able to get either vehicle into production next year. It may consider going public via a “reverse merge” with a special acquisition company — or SPAC — like many, many other EV startups have so far this year.

Bollinger CEO Robert Bollinger has acknowledged having spoken with some SPACs over the summer. The company figured that once it announced the Deliver-E van, given the higher volume play, the next step will be to announce a production partner, followed then by funding news.

“We did have a number of SPACs contact us looking to do something and it just wasn’t the right time for us,” Bollinger told Reuters.

Amazon orders 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes for deliveries - CNBC

mivo.indah.link
An Amazon-branded van from German carmaker Mercedes-Benz.
Amazon

Amazon announced Friday that it has ordered more than 1,800 electric vans from German automaker Daimler's Mercedes-Benz unit as part of its bid to become carbon-neutral by 2040.

The company said the order consisted of 1,200 of Mercedes' larger eSprinter models and 600 of its midsized eVito vans. It's not clear how much Amazon paid for the vehicles.

Amazon said the move was part of its aim to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement a decade ahead of schedule. President Donald Trump infamously pulled the U.S. from the accord — which is designed to prevent global temperatures from rising over 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — back in 2017.

"We welcome the bold leadership demonstrated by Mercedes-Benz by signing up to The Climate Pledge and committing to ambitious action to address climate change," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. "We need continued innovation and partnership from auto manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz to decarbonize the transportation sector and tackle the climate crisis."

Amazon has ramped up its investment into climate initiatives of late, launching a $2 billion venture capital fund to back companies developing climate technologies in June. It's also not the first big order of electric vehicles the company has made — Amazon agreed to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian, a start-up in which it's invested hundreds of dollars.

But the company's logistics muscle has been a source of worry for the postal services industry. Traditional postage firms have been making investments of their own to challenge Amazon's dominance and change with the times. UPS, for example, ordered 10,000 electric vans from U.K. start-up Arrival at the start of the year.

Amazon has benefited from wild growth in e-commerce during the coronavirus pandemic, as consumers flocked online amid government-enforced lockdowns. Bezos, Amazon's billionaire founder, saw his wealth top $200 billion earlier this week thanks to a rise in the company's share price. Amazon shares are up 84% year-to-date.
