American Electric Power is laying off 270 workers, including 170 in Ohio, the Columbus-based power company said Thursday.
The affected workers are scattered among multiple operations in AEP's 11-state territory that stretches from Michigan to Texas, the company said.
The layoffs represent less than 2% of the approximately 17,000 workers that AEP has, including about, 6,400 in Ohio.
"We are committed to supporting them through this transition," the company said in a statement. "This staff reduction is necessary as we look at the roles needed to best meet the expectations of our customers in the face of higher costs of providing reliable service."
The affected workers were notified this week. The layoffs for most of the workers will get into effect Feb. 1.
