Will the Promising Trends At Jhen Vei Electronic (GTSM:3520) Continue? - Simply Wall St

mivo.indah.link

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Jhen Vei Electronic's (GTSM:3520) returns on capital, so let's have a look.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Jhen Vei Electronic, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.055 = NT$33m ÷ (NT$903m - NT$302m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

Therefore, Jhen Vei Electronic has an ROCE of 5.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electronic industry average of 10%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. If you'd like to look at how Jhen Vei Electronic has performed in the past in other metrics, you can view this free graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Can We Tell From Jhen Vei Electronic's ROCE Trend?

Jhen Vei Electronic has broken into the black (profitability) and we're sure it's a sight for sore eyes. While the business was unprofitable in the past, it's now turned things around and is earning 5.5% on its capital. Interestingly, the capital employed by the business has remained relatively flat, so these higher returns are either from prior investments paying off or increased efficiencies. So while we're happy that the business is more efficient, just keep in mind that could mean that going forward the business is lacking areas to invest internally for growth. Because in the end, a business can only get so efficient.

For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 33% of its operations, which isn't ideal. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.

What We Can Learn From Jhen Vei Electronic's ROCE

To bring it all together, Jhen Vei Electronic has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. Although the company may be facing some issues elsewhere since the stock has plunged 92% in the last five years. In any case, we believe the economic trends of this company are positive and looking into the stock further could prove rewarding.

Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Jhen Vei Electronic (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) that you should know about.

Electronic devices could speed aging process | Your Valley - Your Valley

mivo.indah.link

By Sarah Neumann

During the pandemic many people are working long hours on laptops, constantly on smartphones or binge-watching favorite TV shows and movies more than ever.

But while the blue-light emitted by the screens on devices are known to disrupt sleep patterns, what is it doing to people’s skin? This high-energy visible light may be contributing to premature skin aging and making people look older.

Most people are aware by now that ultraviolet light from the sun contributes to more than 90% of the signs of aging skin. HEV or blue-light is similar to UV light but indoors. This short-wavelength light is right up there with UV light in terms of sun exposure.

How does this happen? In small research studies it’s been found that blue light can stimulate the production of free radicals, which accelerates the signs of aging. These free radicals contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, can cause hyperpigmentation and can even affect skin laxity.

To make matters worse, blue light can cause oxidative stress resulting in inflammation or skin aging caused by light waves — similar to when people spend too much time in the sun — which can weaken the outermost layer of skin.

So what can you do to prevent premature aging by blue light? Remember to use a physical, sometimes called mineral-based, sunscreen — even indoors. In sunny Arizona, with the high rate of skin-cancer, people may be using their sunscreen when they leave the house but they also need to use it when working at home.

People are advised to use products containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as a safe alternative to chemical-based sunscreens. These broad-spectrum sunscreens are the best thing people can use every day because they reflect blue light emissions. A daily sun protection factor of 15-30 is acceptable for indoor use. Chemical-based sunscreens absorb, not reflect, wavelengths of ultraviolet light, so they won’t help with blue light emissions. People are advised to avoid sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and avobenzone as the active ingredient.

Whatever product is used, always be sure to apply it 20 minutes before working on a laptop or other devices. Sunscreen needs to be absorbed prior to light exposure to be effective. The same holds true when people apply sun protectant before going outside.

Wear blue-light blocking glasses. While blue-light can affect the skin it can also be affecting the eyes and the delicate skin around the eyes. People can get blue-light glasses to protect their eyes and eye area for as little as $15 online.

Use night mode on devices. Night shift mode on smart devices provides a gentler display light and can help reduce the effects of blue light emissions.

Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals and not only prevent damage but can even repair it over time. Look for products, including serums, containing vitamins A, C and E and hyaluronic acid. It is best to use any anti-oxidant product twice per day since they get depleted during the day. Be sure to apply them both in the morning and evening.

Other things people can do include hut off devices a few hours before going to bed. Blue light can interfere with sleep by affecting the body’s circadian rhythm. Lack of sleep is known to cause skin dullness, swelling and redness and those dreaded under eye dark-circles.

Interestingly, blue light in small amounts can be used to treat acne or accelerate wound healing but, like anything, too much of a good thing may be a bad thing for the skin. While devices can be causing skin damage, people should not forget to get an annual skin cancer exam. Excess sun exposure is still the main cause of premature aging.

Electronic Dance Music Gives New Life To Electronic Music Genres - One EDM

mivo.indah.link

Electronic dance music, sometimes called electronic dance music, party music, or just dance, is quite a broad category of percussive, electronic audio music genres created primarily for parties, raves, nightclubs, and other festivals. With recent popular demand, electronic dance music has been embracing a wider range of instruments and styles, with many artists creating and licensing their own individual brands of electronic dance music. Popular styles in the genre include new-age, breakcore, modern and classic techno, as well as IDM, breakdance, industrial, trance, metal, and hip-hop. One of the newest areas of growth in the genre has been online dance clubs, which feature music from various electronic dance music producers and DJs.

The breakdown of the barriers between electronic dance music and traditional music styles is evidenced by the rise of the term EDM or electronic dance music. This umbrella term covers a wide variety of subgenres and styles, all of which are deeply rooted in the international communities of producers, DJs, and DJs that communicate through online social networking sites. In this manner, the global community of producers and DJs have began sharing resources and learning from each other. Online forums and message boards help to identify common goals and topics of discussion. This has created a positive feedback system between participants that can be beneficial to the growth of any music genre, including EDM.

If you’re interested in getting started with electronic dance music or want to expand your musical horizons, there are some tools you need to get started. For starters, you need good musical equipment. Good equipment will allow you to create the sounds you need. Some popular brands of electronic dance music synthesis software include Cubase, Pro Tools, Fruity Loops, and Logic. Synthesizers like the Yamaha VAX 12 keyboard are popular because they offer a whole range of possibilities for producing sounds.

Another essential tool for creating electronic dance music and pretty much any other genre is a MIDI controller. A MIDI controller is used to trigger various sounds and commands within a song. There are four basic types of controllers to choose from, namely: virtual instruments, virtual racks, virtual keyboards, and drum machines. Virtual instruments come with pre-loaded sounds and MIDI files. Virtual racks contain thousands of different instruments and virtual rack formats (such as MP3 and WAV).

A popular electronic dance music producer who is new to the scene might wonder what type of electronic dance music he should use. While there’s nothing wrong with using popular brands of synthesizers and sound modules, oftentimes the sounds are already loaded into those programs. So if you are starting out, you might want to consider starting out with one of those programs. If you’re more experienced in electronic dance music production, you might decide to start out with a drum machine. But, of course, it’s up to you.

The third most important tool for the new electronic dance music producer is the sequencing software. Sequencing software will typically allow you to sequence tracks and make lay outs. One of the biggest challenges in electronic dance music is being consistent. A good sequencer will help you create a template that will enable you to create and mix your track in just minutes without worrying about getting it right the first time.

Lastly, the last but not least essential tool is the ability to edit digital audio and video. Digital audio and video can be combined to make new and interesting electronic dance music. Digital audio and video consist of waveform manipulation, compression, lossless compression, sample playback, and a lot more. These tools will help you achieve more dynamic electronic dance music. You can find many popular electronic dance music producers that have created really inspiring videos and beats using just these tools.

Hopefully this article has given you three essential tools that you need to be successful as an electronic dance music producer. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it will serve as a great starting point for your research into electronic dance music genres. EDM becomes increasingly popular as the years go on, and you may want to start by taking a basic electronic dance music course to learn the fundamentals. From there, you can build your knowledge by researching additional material and listening to as many different music genres as possible. It may take some time, but the effort will be worth it once you start producing your own personally captivating electronic dance music.

Electronic-records fees opposed - Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

mivo.indah.link

The Arkansas Freedom of Information Task Force on Friday declined to endorse a bill that would allow providers of electronic records from county law enforcement agencies to charge "reasonable fees," including for personnel time, for reviewing and retrieving those records.

Mark Whitmore, legal counsel for the Association of Arkansas Counties, told the task force that Senate Bill 346, by Sen. Jason Rapert, R-Conway, aims to address the resources required to review, redact and release audio and video records, such as a day's worth of 911 tapes or video from the county jail. He said such large requests typically don't come from media organizations but from individuals.

"What we're trying to deal with is the massive, or potential large allocation of resources, deputies, dispatchers, etcetera," Whitmore said. "And we need to deal with the cost."

The bill intends to address difficulties associated with the prevalence of newer technologies, such as how long it may take a sheriff's deputy to redact hours of video, Whitmore said.

But most of the task force members thought the bill could have further-reaching consequences beyond the specific problem law enforcement agencies can face.

According to the state open records law, any fee levied for copies of a document can include the costs of reproduction, such as supplies, equipment and maintenance, but not personnel time associated with retrieving and reviewing the records, while SB 346 includes personnel time among the associated costs.

"Now this bill just speaks to a very small ... carving out, but you can bet that every entity, every public entity that is required to produce records, would rely upon this and attempt to change it and attempt to get personnel time," said task force member John Tull, a media lawyer.

Sarah Moore, a co-founder of the Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition, a community group focused on ending mass incarceration at the local level, said at the meeting that the group tries to tailor its requests and be considerate of deputies' time, and that even medium-sized fees can be a burden for many people living on lower incomes.

"I just really get concerned whenever we start to make legislation that's working toward the extremes," Moore said. "FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] needs to remain strong to protect the very least among us."

The task force is a recommending body, so its decision not to endorse the bill doesn't stop it from progressing through the Legislature.

In other business Friday, the task force deferred discussion and consideration of Senate Bill 355 by Sen. Larry Teague, D-Nashville, which would allow a lottery winner's identity to remain confidential.

Texas Griddy customers moved to other electric companies - The Texas Tribune

mivo.indah.link

Sign up for The Brief, our daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news.

Texans who receive their electricity from Griddy Energy are being shifted to other providers after the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the power grid for most of Texas, revoked the company’s rights to operate because it missed required payments to ERCOT, according to a market notice.

In all, Texas electricity providers failed to make more than $2.1 billion in payments that were due to ERCOT, according to another market notice Friday. The state entity depends on transaction fees from providers to help operate the state’s electric grid. Those missed payments came after the costs for a megawatt hour of electricity jumped from an average of $35 to $9,000 during the height of last week’s devastating winter storm that contributed to the near-collapse of the state’s power grid.

Griddy made headlines for sending massive bills to customers. One woman in Chambers County filed a class-action lawsuit accusing Griddy of price gouging. In the lawsuit, her attorney claimed the company charged her more than $9,000 for the week of the storm in stark contrast to her normal $200 to $500 monthly bill.

Griddy passes wholesale electricity rates directly to customers, who in turn pay the company $10 a month. This differs from fixed-rate electricity plans which offer a consistent rate regardless of market conditions. Wholesale prices spiked during the storm because the winter weather temporarily knocked many power generators offline, shrinking supply and skyrocketing demand.

ERCOT said it was “working closely with PUC staff and Affected Market Participants to ensure an efficient and effective transfer of customers.” ERCOT spokesperson Leslie Sopko said she had no further details on Griddy’s customers.

In a message to customers that Griddy spokesperson Lauren Valdes shared with The Texas Tribune, the company said ERCOT ignored requests for emergency help and shut it down Friday.

“It was not a choice we made,” the message said. “On the same day when ERCOT announced that it had a $2.1 billion shortfall, it decided to take this action against only one company that represents a tiny fraction of the market and that shortfall.”

ERCOT can bar electric providers from conducting business if they make four late payments over one year, according to the entity’s protocols.

Last week, Griddy warned customers about price hikes and encouraged them to switch to other providers, according to previous reporting by The Texas Tribune. The company also posted a blog on its website blaming the Public Utility Commission of Texas, which regulates ERCOT, for raising the wholesale market price of energy.

The disastrous effects of last week’s storm spurred daylong hearings in the Texas House and Senate Thursday and Friday where lawmakers questioned ERCOT CEO Bill Magness, PUC chairperson DeAnn Walker, and representatives from a variety of electricity providers about what went wrong.

Tom Hancock, a representative for municipally-owned utility Garland Power and Light, said many providers may struggle to make their payments to ERCOT on time following the storm’s aftermath.

“ERCOT is due a lot of money today from market participants that could have been short,” Hancock said. “We think if this domino effect is going to start to take place, that after today, we’ll know about it.”

UPDATE 4-Electric firm Griddy loses access to Texas grid, customers shifted to rivals - Yahoo Finance

mivo.indah.link

(Adds reason for removal)

By Gary McWilliams

HOUSTON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Texas's grid operator on Friday shut Griddy Energy LLC's access to the state's power network for unpaid bills and shifted its 10,000 customers to other utilities, as new signs of a financial crisis rose after a state-wide blackout.

Griddy was the power marketer that sold consumers electricity at wholesale rates, which rose to $9,000 per megawatt hour as cold weather struck the state last week. Unable to cope with demand, utilities cut power to 4.3 million residents as temperatures fell below freezing.

Grid operator Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) "effectively shut down Griddy," the electricity marketer said in a statement on its website. Requests for further comment were not returned.

ERCOT separately said $2.1 billion of its service bills went unpaid from utility and other grid users on Friday, another sign of the devastation from high electricity rates during the cold snap.

Griddy's statement said it accounted for "a tiny fraction" of ERCOT's unpaid bills.

ERCOT was transferring about 10,100 Griddy customers to others on Friday. Retail power providers that do not pay invoices within 72 hours can have all their customers reassigned.

The grid operator's handling of the severe weather fueled a firestorm of criticism from residents and state officials who blamed ERCOT for lack of preparation for the severe cold. ERCOT called on utilities to cut power to protect the grid, which left 4.3 million people without heat or light and led to billions of dollars in damages.

ERCOT will likely face more shortfalls in coming days, said Patrick Woodson, chief executive of power marketer Green Energy Exchange. His firm is among nine companies protesting multimillion dollar blackout fees levied by ERCOT.

“The price of surviving the first wave of these high bills is you get hit with additional costs in the second wave," said Woodson. ERCOT spreads unpaid fees among remaining grid users.

The grid operator said it will cover $800 million of the shortfall by borrowing from internal accounts, and will draw an undisclosed amount from grid users with credit balances. An ERCOT spokeswoman did not reply to requests for comment.

Vistra Corp., the largest retail electric provider in the United States, said its TXU unit in Texas "volunteered to take on significantly more customers" expecting a wave of transfers after the outages.

"There often are opportunities to acquire retailers after events of volatility. As always, we will continue to be opportunistic when looking to purchase smaller customer books," spokeswoman Meranda Cohn said in an email.

Seven of ERCOT's 15 directors resigned this week and a nominee withdrew. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said public anger was justified and blamed ERCOT for not acting faster to keep generators from going offline. San Jose halts plans to put electronic billboards on private property - San José Spotlight - San José Spotlight

mivo.indah.link

After being whittled down by fierce community opposition, San Jose lawmakers have officially paused a plan to erect digital billboards on private property.

Before lawmakers stopped it, Phase 2 of the city’s signage plan involved placing electronic billboards on public buildings downtown and up to 75 digital signs on private property along freeways. The proposal could’ve been approved by summer, but the San Jose City Council on Thursday unanimously halted plans to allow digital billboards on private buildings to focus on COVID-19 relief.

The city plans to move forward with installing electronic signs on public property downtown — a revenue generator for the city. It’s unclear how much the city could earn off the plan.

Signs could be placed on the side of public toilets and the money generated would fund the maintenance of those restrooms, said Kim Walesh, director of economic development.

Mayor Sam Liccardo and downtown Councilmember Raul Peralez — who previously supported additional digital billboards — led the charge to pause the proposal.

“In comparison to all the other pressing needs that we have in this coming year, the sign code should not take a priority amongst those,” Peralez said.

Phase 1 of the plan, approved in 2018, could add up to 22 billboards on 17 city-owned sites across San Jose. Eight of those sites are reserved for freeway-facing billboards, while the remaining sites will allow electronic signs to be mounted on public walls downtown. Phase 1 is still in the development stage.

For years, local leaders have touted electronic billboards as a way to generate revenue and add color and excitement to the local landscape, but digital signs have faced the wrath of residents who argue billboards are harmful to the environment, human health and the historic integrity of the city.

John Miller, co-founder of the organization No Digital Billboards in San Jose, led the grassroots charge to stop Phase 2. He said Thursday while the vote only temporarily stalled more billboards, he’s happy the council is shifting its focus.

“We are pleased that the private property component of Phase 2 has been de-prioritized and apparently defunded,” Miller told San JosĂ© Spotlight.

But Miller was skeptical of the city’s choice to move forward with putting more signs downtown.

“Though this aspect of Phase 2 has been under review for a couple of years, it has not been possible to obtain any estimate regarding the amount of advertising revenue that would be accrued by the city,” Miller said. “The project seems like a solution in search of a problem.”

Highland Electric Raises $235M, Lands Biggest Electric School Bus Contract in the US - Greentech Media News

mivo.indah.link

Electric school buses don’t just eliminate the carbon and pollution emissions of their diesel-fueled counterparts; they also cost less to fuel and maintain over the long haul

Unfortunately for cash-strapped school districts, the upfront cost to purchase an electric school bus is still more than twice as much as the cost of a diesel bus today. And that’s not counting the cost of new charging infrastructure or the risk that those charging costs may drive a district’s electric bills through the roof.

Highland Electric Transportation says it can remove those barriers for school districts and transit authorities by taking on the financing and management of an EV school bus fleet in exchange for a fixed annual leasing fee. In the past week, the Hamilton, Mass.-based startup has won two votes of confidence in its business model.

The first came last week, with the close of a $253 million venture capital investment led by Vision Ridge Partners with participation by previous investors and Fontinalis Partners, the venture fund co-founded by Ford Motor Co. executive chairman Bill Ford.

The second came this week when Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Schools awarded Highland a contract to supply it with what will be the country’s largest electric school bus fleet. The deal will start with 326 buses to be delivered over the next four years, along with charging systems at five bus depots.

The cost of that service, $169 million, will be spread out over 16 years, and will fit into the existing budget structures for its existing diesel bus fleet, said Todd Watkins, the district’s transportation director. After seven years of budget-neutrality, the contract will end up saving the district money compared to what it could have expected to spend on its existing bus fleet, he said.

And the district won’t be stuck with the uncertainties of what it will cost to install charging stations, pay for the electricity they use or keep the buses running, because all of that is Highland’s responsibility.

While the district did have access to a small amount of upfront electrification funds from the Volkswagen “Dieselgate” settlement, Watkins said he is “not a huge fan of grant-supported pilot programs in any area, because if you can’t sustain it, it’s too risky.”

Highland’s contract — which is backed by terms that will protect the district from liability if the company goes out of business — “takes the risks that I think school districts across the country are not so willing to take,” he said. If all goes well, the program could expand to replace all 1,400 of the district’s school buses over the coming decade and a half.

“We knew eventually that electric buses would become cheaper than diesels, or at least affordable. But what this deal with Highland did was move that time to now.”

Shouldering the uncertainties of fleet electrification

Highland’s approach is designed to overcome some major stumbling blocks for public and private fleet owners looking at electrifying their buses, trucks and other vehicles, as documented by multiple studies from groups including the Environmental Defense Fund and RMI.

“I would say that the cost and complexity represent the two biggest barriers that have prevented adoption in the past,” said Highland CEO Duncan McIntyre. While many school districts have deployed a handful of electric school buses, moving to a wholesale fleet replacement “in a way that’s aligned with their budget in a relatively unsubsidized environment” is a trickier proposition.

Last year’s 130-bus contract between the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and China’s BYD held the record of the country’s biggest electric bus deployment prior to this week. But an earlier, smaller-scale rollout with L.A. Metro, a separate transit entity in Los Angeles County, ran into challenges with driving range and maintenance that required correction before the broader rollout could commence. *

McIntyre, who founded renewable energy marketplace startup Altenex and sold it to Edison International in 2015, started Highland with the express purpose of taking on those costs and complexities for school districts. Its first deal, made last March with the city of Beverly, Massachusetts, will deploy 27 electric school buses.

Montgomery County’s contract will use the same combination of buses from Thomas Built equipped with batteries from Proterra but at a much larger scale. That brings significantly more risks in terms of managing the costs, but also greater opportunity to improve efficiencies of — and even earn money from — the charging infrastructure involved.

For example, Highland has been working for nine months on plans to equip the five bus depots it’s targeting for charging loads that will eventually grow to 5 megawatts apiece, he said. It ended up prioritizing one depot first, based on the relatively lower cost of connecting it to the existing utility grid infrastructure. The other four depots will be equipped over the next 18 months.

Four of those depots are served by utility Pepco, and the fifth is served by Allegheny Power. Each has unique needs in terms of expanding grid infrastructure to support those big new loads. And unlike states such as California, Maryland hasn’t passed regulations to allow utilities to rate-base those investments as “make-ready” infrastructure, putting the onus on Highland to cover those costs, he said.

Maryland also hasn’t designed special EV charging rates, which means that Highland will be carefully managing how it charges the buses under existing medium and heavy commercial rate tariffs that include significant demand charges, he said.

“We can avoid the vast majority of those demand charges by charging almost entirely off-peak,” mainly during overnight hours, he said. Highland can also shop for competitive electricity suppliers under Maryland’s deregulated energy market structure, he added.

Expanding grid values for EV fleets

Then there’s the opportunity for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) revenue. Maryland is part of the wholesale market structure of mid-Atlantic grid operator PJM, which has been a vanguard in allowing electric vehicles to discharge excess battery power to the grid to serve in its frequency regulation markets.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Order 2222, passed last year, will require PJM and the country’s other interstate grid operators to expand market access for EVs and other distributed energy resources to their broader energy and capacity markets, “which is really opening the door to giving those assets appropriate value,” he said.

Getting enough EVs together to “have enough scale to actually be relevant assets to begin with” is a key step in making the economics of V2G work in Highland’s favor.

In some states, utilities are seeking to become the overarching provider of school bus electrification services, with Dominion Energy’s 50-bus pilot being the prime example. But Dominion has yet to win Virginia lawmakers’ approval to expand its program to 1,000 electric school buses by 2025, with competing bills proposing other methods to open the market to non-utility competitors. In North Carolina, utility Duke Energy has launched a fleet EV charging subsidiary after seeing a proposed charging pilot program scaled back by state regulators.

McIntyre believes that non-utility actors should be given a chance to compete against utilities’ entrenched market advantage, to ensure that private capital can be deployed at a scale needed to rapidly expand vehicle electrification to meet local, state and federal decarbonization goals. At the same time, he’s supportive of policies that can align utilities’ investments in a way that supports the EV charging build-out that will be needed to shift from fossil fuels to cleaner electricity.

Nat Kreamer, CEO of Advanced Energy Economy, highlighted the different roles for utilities and fleet electrification specialists in a world where transportation is expected to become a major new electrical load.

“For utilities, electrifying transportation is a huge growth area,” he said, with commensurate support for policies that can “let them do that make-ready [investment] so they can grow that business.” But when it comes to fleet owners, he recommends that firms “just sell the customer what they’re really paying for, which is a mile driven with clean electricity. That ends up being a really powerful business model.”

Yield Sign Flashing: Spike In 10-Year Treasury Above 1.5% Spooks Market In Thursday Selloff

The Fed has said it won’t raise rates. The market is saying “We may raise rates for you.” That’s arguably the story of today’s messy selloff. The 10-year Treasury yield flirted with and then finished above 1.5% for the first time in a year. That’s up 60 basis points from the start of 2021 and more than 20 points from a week ago. As the bond selloff accelerated, investors appeared to discount Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s soothing words about inflation from earlier this week and took things into their own hands. Treasury yields tend to climb when people worry about rising prices. The pace of this yield rally is almost unprecedented. What was really surprising Thursday was how strong selling was in the Nasdaq (COMP), which is full of growth and Tech stocks that are often seen being more vulnerable to higher rates. You had stocks like Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), and Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) fall sharply. The chip makers got pounded, with some down more than 5%. You also had the “stay-at-home” stocks like the Zoom Video Communication Inc's (NASDAQ: ZM) and DocuSign Inc's (NASDAQ: DOCU) of the world getting absolutely smoked. Those stocks had all been down yesterday before staging a late-day comeback. So much for that. Meanwhile, GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) took a wild ride higher, then fell sharply but still finished up 18% for the day. Anyone thinking about buying an exchange-traded fund (ETF) should understand what they’re getting into, because many ETFs have volatile companies like GME included. Ugly Close Could Reflect Yield’s Relentless Rally Earlier this week, dramatic stock market declines met buying interest down below and stocks bounced back. Not on Thursday. Instead, things got uglier into the close, suggesting less “buy the dip” enthusiasm. After a 425-point rally in the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) on Wednesday, we saw it fall nearly 560 points today. The volatility has been dramatic all week, and the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) reflects that, rising nearly 34% today to above 28. One day isn’t a trend, and there’s no way to predict now if buyers will show up tomorrow. A lot of that depends on what the 10-year yield does overnight. One thing that kept buyers pouring into stocks over the last 10 months was historically low yields. You really can’t say that’s the case anymore. The 10-year Treasury yield topped 1.55% today for the first time since Feb. 19, 2020. That’s a date that sticks out because it also marked the last all-time high for the S&P 500 Index (SPX) before the pandemic sent it crashing down by about 35% over the following month. Yields declined then along with stocks, reaching an all-time low of under 0.4% last March for the 10-year. Between then and the start of 2021, the 10-year yield traded in a range of between roughly 0.6% and 0.9%, with few exceptions. Since then, it’s climbed 65 basis points in less than two months. The Auctioneer’s Gavel Was Quite The Hammer Though the 10-year yield has been on the rise pretty much since the year began, it’s really accelerated this week. The catalyst today—and arguably what helped extend stock market losses—was an auction of 7-year Treasury notes that participants have described as “tepid,” “awful,” and even “brutal” in the words of a Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC) analyst. The equity market seems to have priced in a good deal of dovishness from fiscal and monetary authorities. While that’s all well and good, it’s predicated on having sufficient demand for the resulting debt. If there’s not sufficient demand for that debt, absent additional participation from the Fed, interest rates will need to rise to meet demand. So if markets have come to expect a continued rise in yields, tepid demand at auction can help make it happen sooner rather than later. And that can impact not only the previously high-flying tech shares, but if it continues, could also start to be felt in other interest rate-sensitive sectors such as housing. This is a trend worth watching. Yields, The Cost Of Money, And The Earnings Connection That’s a lot to absorb, but it’s important for investors to understand because the 10-year yield often holds the key to stock market trends. When the yield is extremely low, the cost of money is cheap, and that tends to help big growth stocks with high valuations. Think of how the Tech sector rallied last year. Back then, there was lots of talk about how low yields (and the Fed’s dovish interest rate policy) meant valuations could be higher than normal because the cost of borrowing was cheap and would help strengthen future earnings. That’s a harder argument to make now with yields back at a more normal level, though still low from a historic standpoint. The other thing that has people nervous is how quickly yields bounced. Typically you don’t see this kind of rapid action in the fixed income market unless there’s fear around, the way it was last year when yields crashed during the first pandemic wave. It’s harder for companies to make long-term plans when yields fluctuate so much this quickly, and it could ultimately mean companies putting off plans for investment, whether it’s for new products or acquisitions. They may decide to sit back a bit and see where yields go before making big decisions, and that’s not necessarily a positive thing for the stock market. Leaving the yield discussion behind for a moment, Thursday’s action took the major indices down below some key technical support levels, which probably drove more selling. The SPX fell below its 20-day moving average at around 3873. The 20-day has been a level the SPX bounced off of several times over the last few months, including earlier this week. Now it’s well below that and is close to its 50-day moving average, which is at 3805. The COMP however, closed below its 50-day moving average and is close to 13,000, a low it hit a couple of times in the recent past. This is a level worth watching as we head into the last trading day of the month. And if you need one more possible reason for the Thursday selloff, remember that during the runup in stocks, many were pointing to the acronym “TINA” (there is no alternative) to stocks with yields so low. But if yields continue to climb, at some point they become a compelling “A.” Market Dive Comes A Day Before House Stimulus Vote Could the market be trying to tell Congress and the administration something? There’s never a single reason why stocks or bonds move in any direction, and there’s a lot going on besides President Biden’s plan to push through another round of fiscal stimulus. That being said, the 10-year yield climbed to above 1.55% today from 1.1% on inauguration day just over a month ago, and tomorrow is when the House is expected to vote on the $1.9 trillion package. While improved Covid numbers, vaccination progress, and some firm economic data points helped push yields higher, another factor could be investor concern about the stimulus potentially overheating the economy and raising inflation. This isn’t a political column, but keep an eye out next week for any possible indications of concerns coming up during debate in the Senate. It still seems very likely stimulus will pass, but could its cost get driven down a bit if the bond market keeps ringing bells the way it’s been? That may be something to watch. CHART OF THE DAY: YIELD RALLY INTERRUPTS TECH PARTY. Over the last month, the Info Tech sector (IXT—purple line) rallied and then got clipped by the relentless rise in the 10-year Treasury yield (TNX—candlestick). The yield rose on Thursday to one-year highs above 1.5%, raising worries about possible pressure on future earnings for high-flying and highly-valued growth sectors. Nvidia Investors Are Pulling Back On Q4 Results, But These Analysts Still Like Chipmaker's Potential

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) reported better-than-expected quarterly results Wednesday, but the stock is slipping amid a sector-wide tech sell-off and concerns about a potential slowdown in data center growth. The Nvidia Analysts: Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill maintained a Buy rating and upped the price target from $700 to $800. Rosenblatt Securities analyst Hans Mosesmann reiterated a Buy rating on Nvidia shares and increased the price target from $650 to $700. Raymond James analyst Chris Caso reiterated an Outperform rating and hiked the price target from $600 to $700. KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Weston Twigg maintained a Sector Weight rating. Needham Crunches Q4 Numbers: Nvidia reported record quarterly sales of $5 billion, ahead of Needham's $4.8-billion estimate, and guided to first-quarter sales of $5.3 billion, also ahead of the firm's $4.3-billion estimate, Gill said in a note. The core data center segment remained strong, with adoption in multiple end markets, the analyst said. "The A100 system, powered by the Ampere GPU, continue to show strength and vertical industries now represents >50% of revenue, with supercomputing, financial services, higher education and consumer internet showing strong adoption." Gaming demand continues to be very strong, as only 15% of the 250-million-strong GeForce installed base is on Ampere, according to Needham. Related Link: NVIDIA: Q4 Earnings Insights Why Nvidia Is Rosenblatt's Favorite Semi Play: Nvidia reported another beat-and-raise quarter amid continued supply chain constraints that will likely keep channel inventories at depressed levels for another one to two quarters, Mosesmann said. All key product categories are expected to grow in the April quarter, taking the company's outlook to $5.3 billion, the analyst said. View more earnings on NVDA A key near-term theme is the $100 million to $300 million contribution from cryptos, he said. Nvidia is trying to reduce crypto acceleration by reducing performance of GPUs by half when mining algorithms are turned on and by introducing crypto mining processors, Mosesmann said. "We are aligned with Nvidia's view that we are at the early stages of an AI driven cycle (data center acceleration, DPU adoption, GPU gaming raytracing inflection, and automotive)." Nvidia is one of Rosenblatt's favorite semiconductor plays, the analyst said. RayJay Says Nvidia's Growth Unmatched: The better-than-expected fourth-quarter print and the first-quarter revenue guidance that is 18% above the consensus were primarily due to strong performance by the gaming segment, Caso said in a note. All other segments also performed ahead of expectations, the analyst said. As supply constraints ease and more supply comes along as the year progresses, and with inventories nonexistent, revenue will continue to grow from here, he said. "Crypto will be an investor concern given the unsustainable crypto revenue back in 2018 — but the company appears to be taking steps to minimize that as a percent of revenue, and the gaming market is clearly much stronger than the 2018 cycle." Although first-quarter expectations for the data center business appear modest, A100 adoption and higher hyperscale capex will work out positively for the segment, Caso said. On a net basis, Nvidia is on pace to double organic revenue from fiscal 2020 to 2022, and has quadrupled revenue since 2016, the analyst said. "While the multiple is high, no one else in the space is coming close to this level of growth, and they have multiple shots on goal in gaming and datacenter that can continue to drive growth." 10 best electric kettles of 2021 - TODAY - TODAY

The electric kettle train has been roaring at full steam in America in recent years. Capable of bringing cold water to a rolling boil in 3 minutes, today's electric kettles are far more efficient than the one that debuted at the 1893 World's Fair. (It took 10 minutes.)

Now, we have gooseneck kettles, perfect for pour-over coffee since the water flow can be easily controlled. And smartphone compatible electric kettles, perfect for the tea drinker on their drive home who wants hot water the second they walk in the door.

Whatever your budget or beverage of choice, here are 10 of the best electric kettles money can buy right now.

1. Mueller Premium with SpeedBoil Tech

With an impressive 4.8-star average rating from more than 32,000 reviews, this electric kettle from Meuller holds the #1 spot on Amazon's list of Best Sellers in Electric Kettles. It's so popular, in fact, it's on the top 100 list of Amazon's Best Sellers in Home & Kitchen. While the aesthetic is nothing too special, it gets serious points for safety features like a heat-resistant easy-to-grip handle and an automatic shut-off so your water won't keep boiling until it evaporates.

2. Amazon Basics Stainless Steel Electric Kettle

Another few-frills budget-friendly option is this kettle, Amazon's second bestseller in the category. It has a 4.7-star average rating from more than 32,000 reviews. Since it's small and only holds about 32 ounces, it's perfect for the solo drinker who just wants a cup or two and doesn't need extras like a keep warm feature or different tea settings. Although the power cord is long — 30 inches — it's not bulky and wraps around the base for easy storage.

3. Hario Gooseneck Electric Coffee Kettle

Also on the smaller side is this stainless steel electric kettle with a 4.6-star average rating from more than 5,100 reviews. It holds about 27 ounces, which are poured out slowly, and precisely, thanks to the strategic gooseneck design. Chef Anja Wolf told Shop TODAY it's ideal for pour-over coffee where you need a slow and steady stream of water to get a smooth, non-acidic taste. "The way the water hits the ground beans is the key to making the perfect cup of coffee," explains the CEO of I Love Cookware!.

4. HadinEEon Glass Electric Kettle

If you're not a fan of the gooseneck but still want good coffee, you're in luck. According to Michael Murdy, the ultimate extraction temperature for coffee is approximately 203-205 degrees. Murdy, who has a B.S. in Food Science and Technology, recommends this kettle with a traditional spout because it turns off at approximately 208 degrees (varies slightly by altitude). If you pour it over your coffee right after it turns off, it's the perfect temperature. "For a sharp, strong cup of coffee, this is the kettle," he told Shop TODAY. "It’s simple, cheap, quiet and makes my coffee just how I like it." Others like it, too. On Amazon it has a 4.8-star average rating from more than 12,500 reviews.

5. Bonavita Variable Temperature Electric Kettle 1L

For optimal-tasting tea, certified tea sommelier Jee Choe recommends this electric kettle with a 4.7-star average rating from more than 5,300 reviews. "Water temperature is a big part of making tea properly," says Choe. "Black teas taste best when steeped in boiling hot water, but green teas are fickle and can taste overly bitter if they're made in water that's too hot." Fortunately, this kettle is adjustable by one-degree increments from 140-212 degrees. Tinker with it to discover which temperature makes your ideal cup. It even features a hold button which will keep water at your desired temperature for up to an hour.

6. Chefman 1.8L Glass Electric Kettle

Another great option for the tea aficionado is this cordless Chefman kettle that includes a removable stainless steel tea infuser. Use it to brew loose leaf or bagged teas. It has seven distinct settings designed for making different teas including green, black, white, oolong and herbal. And there's no piercing whistle. When your tea is ready, the kettle's LED light lights up. Since it holds 60 ounces, it's also ideal for boiling water for your family's morning oatmeal.

7. Bodum Melior Gooseneck Kettle

For an aesthetically-pleasing electric kettle, consider this minimalistic model which comes in matte black and matte silver. The handles are all-natural and made from 100% recycled European cork. Besides looking chic, the cork protects your hands from the heat. Buy it for yourself or the person you're currently gift hunting for. It has a 4.6-star average rating from more than 4,100 reviews and is one of Amazon's most wished for electric kettles.

8. Capresso H20 Plus

If you need multiple cups of hot water at a time, and want to watch it boil, try this electric kettle made with German Schott DURAN heat-resistant glass. It holds 48 ounces of hot water and has been around since 2001. It's durable and holds up well with years of use. Thanks to its 360-degree swivel base, it's a great option for households with right-handed and left-handed users.

9. Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp

Don't let the nearly triple-digit price tag scare you off. This electric kettle with a 4.6-star average rating from nearly 10,000 reviews will last years. And if for some fluke reason it doesn't, take advantage of the 3-year warranty. It boasts six preset temperatures for different types of tea, a coffee setting for French press coffee and a boil setting for things like making instant noodles, instant cereal or even sanitizing baby bottles. The coolest feature is the internal memory that prevents it from automatically going into standby mode when you take the carafe off its base. As long as you return it to its base within two minutes, it will go back to the temperature you had set.

10. Fellow Stagg EKG+

The Rolls Royce, or rather, Tesla, of electric kettles is this design-forward electric kettle from Fellow. Leave it on your counter and you're sure to get compliments from guests. In terms of functionality, it offers the ultimate precision pour. In fact, several coffee experts — from the baristas at Caravan Coffee to James Hyslop, founder of The Coffee Folk — told Shop TODAY that electric kettles don't get any better. Unlike other models, it offers temperatures in Celsius. But the feature that really warrants spending so much is the bluetooth compatibility and free app. With it you can turn your kettle on and off remotely. On Amazon it has a 4.6-star rating from more than 2,200 reviews.
