Harrison includes hazardous, electronic waste collection in new garbage contract - TribLIVE

Harrison will no longer host events twice a year so residents can dispose of electronic and hazardous waste because residents will now be able to get rid of them from their homes year-round, Commissioner William Heasley said.

Commissioners have approved adding household collection of hazardous waste as part of a new three-year garbage contract with Waste Management.

The collection includes CRT televisions, monitors and other electronics that residents have had to pay a per-pound fee to dispose of at the collection events held at the township building.

The “At Your Door” special collection program will add $1.05 per month, or $3.15 per quarterly bill, in the first year of the contract.

There also is a 4.5% rate increase for garbage and recycling in the first year and 4% in the second and third years. The hazardous waste fee increases to $1.09 per month, or $3.27 quarterly, in 2022 and $1.13 per month, or $3.39 per quarter, in 2022, Township Manager Rich Hill said.

Heasley said that last year he personally had per-pound fees at a collection event run over $100.

“For $1.05 a month, this is a bargain,” Hill said.

Hill said the collection service won’t be running for two to three weeks.

How it works

To participate, residents will have to schedule collection appointments online at wmatyourdoor.com, by calling 800-449-7587 or by sending an email to atyourdoor@wm.com.

Residents who schedule pickups will be provided with kit bags.

Materials that must be placed inside the bag include automotive products, paint products, mercury, household cleaners, flammable and combustible materials, swimming pool chemicals and garden chemicals.

Items accepted outside the bag include vehicle batteries, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps, televisions, computer systems and other electronics.

If residents have more than will fit in a kit, Waste Management advises residents that they can schedule another collection. Residents may also combine small amounts with their neighbors.

What they won’t take

Some materials are not accepted. They include biological waste, construction materials, smoke detectors, pressurized cylinders, ammunition, commercial products, e-cigarettes, medicines, asbestos, tires, radioactive materials, fire extinguishers, explosives and business supplies from homes.

Waste Management was the township’s garbage hauler last year and was the only bidder for the new contract, Hill said. Residents are billed quarterly.

Without the new hazardous waste collection service, the quarterly cost for garbage and recycling service is increasing by 4.5%, from $63 to $65.85. With the At Your Door service included, the increase is 9.5%, to $69.

The total quarterly cost increases by 4% in each of the next two years, to $71.76 in 2022 and $74.61 in 2023.

A new 10% discount on the garbage and recycling fee will be available for residents age 65 and older, but Hill said they will pay the regular charge for the hazardous waste service. Hill said township officials are working on how to provide the discount, including confirming eligibility for the senior rate.

The quarterly cost for residents qualifying for the discount will be $62.43 in the first year, $64.92 in the second year and $67.50 in the third year.

After three years, there is an option for the township to continue the contract for an additional two years, Hill said.
