GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Clean Community System had their annual recycling drive this past June, and it was so successful that they decided to bring it back for a second time this year.

“It’s amazing you just think that after one of these events you’re done seeing these older T.V.'s, and today we’ve seen so many projection T.V.'s and wood console T.V’s. It’s amazing that they’re still around,” Clean Community System’s Executive Director Denise McGovern-Gallagher said.

Clean Community System has received countless calls from people begging them to bring back their semi-annual recycling drive, and on Saturday they finally gave the people what they want.

“It was a chance for me to get rid of some electronic equipment that we’ve had in our office towers, laptops cash registers, and other items, and do it in a safe way,” David Plond said.

The recycling drive started at 8 a.m. and ended at noon, but by the time it was 10 a.m., organizers said they were already full.

“We have reached that threshold and I’ve had to turn people away,” McGovern-Gallagher said.

CCC accepted computers, laptops, printers, microwaves, and anything electronic, but they really wanted T.V.’s.

“They contain mercury in them, and so that’s not good for our environment if they go to the landfill,” McGovern-Gallagher said.

Lines of cars stretched down Sky Park Road carrying old electronics in their trunks and backseats.

People drove up, and CCC volunteers took the junk off their hands to be recycled.

“I believe in recycling and taking care of the planet," Plond said. "I work for the boy scouts, and so we’re very environmental friendly.”

Organizers say people are being responsible by choosing to recycle their items rather then throwing them away.

“We only have one planet to live on and so doing this today is the right thing,” McGovern-Gallagher said.

Clean community system partnered with the company E-Stroyed to recycle all of the electronics from the event.
