Electronic waste collection site coming to Cheektowaga to help curb illegal dumping - WKBW-TV

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) — Town of Cheektowaga officials say many residents have asked about electronic waste and where they can dispose of it. As of now, there is no place to dispose of the waste which Town of Cheektowaga Highway Superintendent Mark Wegner says leads to illegal dumping.

In an effort to curb illegal dumping and protect the environment, the town will be implementing an added service, a new electronic drop off site at the Cheektowaga Highway Department.

Residents will be able to dispose of approved old and unused electronic materials. They will need to register the items they want to dispose of as well as show proof of residency in the Town of Cheektowaga.

There is no charge to drop off electronics except for the following items:

Flat Panel Monitors - $15.00
Flat Panel Television - $30.00
CRT Monitors - $30.00
CRT TV less than 27” – $30.00
CRT TV larger than 27” - $50.00

"Based on regulations, the Town incurs a cost to dispose of the above mentioned items so that cost will unfortunately be passed onto residents/nonresidents," a release states.

Non-residents will be charged an additional $10.00 fee.

The electronic drop off site will be open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Officials say this does not replace regular sanitation pickup of large appliances, microwaves and metals.

"It’s important to remember that this is a new program and does not replace the current Sanitation pickup of large appliances, microwaves and metals. You must call the Sanitation Department (686-3426) 24 hours prior to placing at the curb for pickup on your regular collection day. REMOVE ALL DOORS FROM REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS. Pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paints, paint thinners, batteries (including Auto) flammable materials and liquids, and similar materials WILL NOT BE COLLECTED by Sanitation. Most hazardous materials can be disposed of when Erie County has a Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day. (Contact Erie County at 858-6800 for date of next drop off day)."
