Chicago’s top cop urges revamp of electronic monitoring system after weekend bloodshed - Chicago Sun-Times

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown called for an overhaul of the electronic home monitoring system after a weekend of gun violence across the city that saw 17 homicides, including the death of a 7-year-old girl.

“We must keep violent offenders in jail longer,” Brown said during a news conference Monday. “We should revamp the electronic monitoring program. It’s clearly not working.”

“On behalf of the Chicago Police Department, I extend my deepest, deepest condolences and sympathies to all of the families,” Brown said, noting 13 other shooting victims were “young people.”

Brown singled out 7-year-old Natalia Wallace, who was shot Saturday night while visiting her grandmother at a party in the Austin neighborhood.

“We cannot allow this to be normalized in this city,” Brown said. “We cannot get used to hearing about children being gunned down in Chicago every weekend.”
